    91 isn't a bad "break".
Saw him play Alex Higgins in the B&H Gold Cup final in 1980. Higgins was in great form and battered Ray and we got a few "exhibition" frames from them to fill the rest of the evening.
    RIP Ray.

One of the true characters of the game. With the early success of the BBC's 'Pot Black' series, it helped elevate Ray Readon and others to the status of becoming household names.

Did your father play professionally, or was he just a very good amateur?

Good amateur, Ray, Fred & joe Davis, + numerous others, used to play the club circuit, playing snooker & billiards.

Billiards was the big gambling game in those early days.
                  Needed good positional play

                      Re: Ray Reardon

I’m no expert, but I think Ray Reardon’s unflappable temperament was probably his greatest asset as his attitude never seemed to change no matter how much pressure there was. I don’t remember him as a great potter, but in an era where safety dominated, he was up there with the best of them in that department. Seemed a genuine bloke as well.

                      RIP

A gentleman of the game and one of those who helped the sport transition to a popular tv event.
Was also good to see him mentor Ronnie over few years ago when he was going through a tough patch.

An amazing excerpt from a Ray Reardon interview on Parkinson that I was unaware of.

So sad to hear about the passing of Ray Reardon. A titan of snooker. A marvellous man. And this story about his days in the mines is still one of the most astonishing I’ve ever heard… https://t.co/qLtwUtKDco

I can remember Ray Reardon at his best. What a fantastic player and what a gentleman on or off the green baise.
                            RIP Ray.

All the good players of the late 60's. 70's had played billiards, except for Higgins - and it showed. There were a lot of 'semi -pros' on the circuit who used to travel down to places like Cardiff and hustle players out of ££££'s. Remember as a schoolkid in Burroughs and Watts snooker rooms in the High ST watching these shady guys clearing up !
