  • How much do our players do away from training?

I've been watching the Netflix series "Receiver" about the wide receiver position.

There was another series on Quarterbacks that I hadn't noticed as my account is new.

One thing I've picked up on watching the footage of these players featured is they are dedicated to educating themselves, watching plays and going over and over clips on their iPads at home. I know football clubs in the UK have sessions where a coach or the manager will sit the team down, or maybe the attack/defence and show them specific clips on an upcoming opponent, but I just cant imagine Jamilu Collins and Perry Ng sat on their sofas going over and over individual wingers and how they play, what they do in certain situations etc.

Does anyone know any different? Am I wrong?

Most of them spend most free time with the tattooist. Ask Joe Rodon.

Managers like Julian Nagelsmann send out all the team tactics in digital format a few days before each game.

I get that, but do you think the players do things off their own backs?

They don't have to really, most clubs have analytics teams who do it for them. You've probably seen them before a sub comes on and they show them some tactical charts to refresh their memories.

What benefit is there to doing it off their own backs? The last thing you want is a player doing their own thing.

I think there's a lot more focus on film and set plays in American sports. I imagine it probably helps that something like American Football is far more rigid than association football

I imagine much of the clips they watch will have been provided by the coaching/analysis department

You can almost predict every move in modern football, especially if you focus on one team. It's all about percentages and minimising errors. That's probably why a lot of people found the Euros boring, and thought individual players weren't very good.

I am going to stick my neck out and say the clips these nfl players watch at home are provided by their analytics team or whatever the **** they call them, but they put in the extra time and effort at home and don't just leave it at a few sessions at training etc.

My insinuation was that football players do absolutely **** all extra. I found it interesting that high level players in the nfl are happy to do all this in their spare time.

Yes id imagine all clips are provided, but can you imagine football players going to the same effort?

I think they have far more to learn in the nfl.

With regard to offensive players in American football (WR/QB) they're studying their own playbook. Typically, the playbook for a team on offence will have over a hundred different plays - they HAVE to get each play right.

There's little chance of studying opposing teams' plays, there's simply too many. Defensive players have to just try and read the situation there and then - man-for-man marking or zonal marking.

I actually prefer the olden days when the players used to turn up half cut and did crazy things like scoring from the halfway line.

The clip I saw the player was watching an opposition play over and over, I get that they have tons of different plays to learn but this wasn't what they were showing.

Some will, some won't. Imagine its the same in most sports, though there is definitely more importance placed on such things in America

Definitely more to learn in the NFL. The playbook for starers, soccer may be getting more predictable, but its nowhere near having a playbook like they do in the NFL
