Re: Most Championship Goals Since 2004

Dangling a stat like that, it needs a reply....

I haven't included playoff games as I couldn't be bothered, but we've still easily scored more goals in the Championship than any other team since the start of the 2004/05 season. It is worth pointing out that we have played 18 seasons in the division over that period, more than any other team. Next come Derby and QPR, having spent 17 seasons in the Championship.

It may not be any surprise, either, to find that we have conceded more goals in the Championship over the last 20 seasons, bar QPR. We have conceded 992, QPR have let in 1022.

We have also won 1221 points in the Championship. Again the highest, but no surprise there.

56 different teams have competed in the Championship over the last 20 seasons.

We have scored an average of 60.78 goals per season (ranked 23rd) in the league and conceded an average of 55.11 (ranked 16th). We have a win percentage of 40% (17th) and a loss percentage of 32.5% (16th).

While there will be some who are no longer awake at this point, I was interested to see what difference there has been between the first 10 of those 20 seasons and the second 10. As we spent 1 season in the PL in each of those 10 seasons, comparisons are pretty straightforward.

      Championship games total record: 2004/05 - 2013/14 , 2014/15 - 2023/24

      Won: 170 / 164
      Drew: 124 / 104
      Lost: 120 / 149

      Scored: 574 / 520
      Conceded: 477 / 515

      Goal difference: +97 / +5

      Points: 634 / 587

The figures don't suggest a huge difference, but when you compare scoring averages and win percentages, there is a greater disparity.

Between 2004/05 and 2013/14 our goalscoring average was ranked 12th out of 50 Championship teams, which I think is pretty impressive. Over the last 10 seasons it is ranked 24th out of 46 teams. Our goals conceding rank is very similar for both seasons.

Between 2004/05 and 2013/14 we had the 9th best win percentage of all Championship sides and the 8th lowest defeat percentage. Over the last 10 seasons that has dropped to 19th and 24th respectively.
