  • Graham Thorpe.

Passed away at just 55. I know he was very seriously ill a couple of years back when he was coaching in Afghanistan I think it was, wonder if that had anything to do with it?

I'd say he was the best English batsman of the nineties.

    RIP

I'm pretty certain it's the same illness and he hasn't recovered. There's been no news of him since then. Very sad. A fantastic batsman.

His book is a good read. He had really poor Mental Health in the earlier part of his Test Career but they kept picking him as he kept scoring runs.

On one occasion in a Test Match he was in such a state going to bat the wicket keeper was giving the verbals and he told him to shut up as he will be out in a minute anyway.

He then remembers looking up at the scoreboard with loads of runs to his name not really having been with it.

      RIP.

Such sad news , for someone relatively young. A really good middle order batsmen.

I gather he has not been seen in public since his serious illness in 2022, so it does seem likely sadly.

Yes, I’ve just read something to the same effect in an obituary.

can remember him scoring a century without hitting any boundaries probably in the early 2000s

A real class act. I loved watching him bat. He seldom gave it away. Plenty of dog and grit, but then like so many left handers, so graceful when he stroked it to the boundary. RIP Graham.

Very sad news Indeed. Absolutely no age.

Your post answered the question I was going to ask. Keep seeing tributes mentioning how gritty he was, but I always had a vision of a very silky left handed in my head. The combination of the 2 you mentioned makes it make sense.

Bob, I don’t think he actually managed to take up the post of coaching Afghanistan, due to his illness.
