Terrible, but that street in Ponty is built on the river bank practically what a daft place to build a row of houses and expect them not to get flooded.

They used to dredge the river regularly in front of those houses and floods were very rare. Once in the early 60s but recently with all the storms there is not enough river bed capacity to deal with all the rain.
Dredge it, problem sorted, yesterday just a little more capacity would have averted the breach.

That makes sense but does the money come from, we are lucky if they pick up the bins on time and cut the grass and hedges more than three times a year.

Pontypridd is a catch area for a number of rivers and always gets it in the neck

I'd move. Makes no sense to keep living there.

I suspect that moving is not an affordable option for many who live there.

The area was only on "Amber alert" apparently and the governing bodies are under investigation.

The weather forecast two days before looked horrendous and so it proved to be.

Locals reckon simple supplies of sandbags in time would have mitigated the destruction considerably.

What the hell do these people do all day ffs

Also once you've had a flood it is very difficult/expensive to get insurance and thus the property value suffers.

Anyone watching ‘Britain’s Killer Wave of 1607’ on Channel 5 at the moment? The story of the tsunami like surge that devastated both sides of the Bristol Channel. Still evidence of it around Peterstone & St Brides areas to this day.

Saw a bit, got recorded, not watched yet.
Scary. Did they give a reason?
                      Tidal surge of tsunami?
What could cause either? No radar then to spot a minor asteoid splashing into the Atlantic.

I live on flat land, so I got a bit nervous years ago when floods were reported all over the place, but over my back fence there's a footpath, the other side of the path is a reen that seems to be doing its job.
For the uninitiated, a reen (various spellings) is a bit like a canal, but more of a large drainage ditch.
Probably dug out decades ago to drain/irrigate the farmland this used to be.

Meant to watch that, forgot about it. Does Channel 5 have an iPlayer thing to catch up?
