      Re: Terry Griffiths

My overriding memory of Terry Griffiths' World Championship win in 1979 was his sense of incredulity in his post match interviews as he progressed through the competition, it was a likeable trait and I'd say it helped him to maintain his popularity despite a game which was fairly boring when compared to the young attacking potters coming through like White and Hendry.

Others may think differently, but I'll always associate Griffiths' World title win with the onset of the snooker boom of the early to mid eighties - remember that game between Griffiths and Cliff "the Grinder" Thorburn which finished at something like 2.30 in the morning (actually, I just checked and it went on to 3.51 am!)?

      RIP

A great player and sounds like he was a cracking bloke too. Hadn't realised he'd been involved with coaching.

I remember how John Virgo would take the piss out of him on Big Break. Once he announced that he was going to get help from Terry Griffiths to play a trick shot, then he'd bring out a replica tortoise!

Most of them try hard, or at least try a bit, on the first LL, then give up on the second, rhyming it with Telly.

Always came across as a real nice guy, but had a ruthless streak on the table.
A massive achievement to win the world title as a qualifier. RIP

                    Re: Terry Griffiths

I recall he was involved in the first televised 147 break, sitting on his arse in the corner.
I seem to remember he actually lost the game 0 - 151. That takes some doing.
