The longest run of consecutive seasons we've spent in the second tier in the football league is 13 seasons, set between 1962/63 and 1974/75. This is followed by the 10 seasons spend there between 2003/04 and 2012/13. In total, this is the 10th stint where we've been in the second tier.
That 1974/75 season also saw us compete in the top two divisions for the 28th consecutive season, the longest spell like that in our history. Our current run is 22 consecutive seasons, while our next longest run was a mere 11 seasons from our first ever season in the league, which also saw our longest ever run in the top division.
It could be said that we've had one of our best spells in our history and that we might be due to drop down. We were promoted back to the second division at our first attempt in 1976 and 1983, while the 18 seasons spent down there from 1985/86 to 2002/03 were unusual when looking at our overall history.
In total this is our 52nd season in the second tier, only 9 other sides have spent more seasons in the division, so this could be regarded as our natural level.
Barnsley hold the record for 30 consecutive seasons in the second tier, followed by Blackpool with 26. It's becoming less common to see sides stay in the second tier for long lengths of time any more. Ipswich managed 17 seasons until 2019, Forest and Derby managed 14 seasons until 2022.
