  • Our never ending home form

Today saw our 80th home league game since the start of the 2021/22 season. We've lost 39 of those. That's the worst home defeat record since the start of the 2021/22 season of all sides in the top 4 divisions, taking out those sides who haven't been in the league for all of those seasons. That rate of nearly 49% is also the worst defeat percentage of all sides in the top 4 divisions.

Perhaps surprisingly, there are 8 sides with a worse win percentage than us, but we do have one of the lowest rates of drawing games at home as well.

In those 80 home games we have scored a less-than-impressive 80 goals, with only Gillingham's 75 goals from their 80 home games having a worse average. Thank goodness for those 7 goals against Plymouth and Portsmouth!

18 sides have conceded more goals than us while 28 sides have conceded more on average. Our cumulutive home goal difference since the start of 2021/22 stands at -21, the worst in the league.

If goals = excitement, then games at the CCS are among the least exciting in the league. Only 8 sides have seen fewer goals scored by both teams on average than Cardiff City at home.

Can you find any stats to cheer us up?
We already knew that watching City at home has been a dour experience for a few seasons now.

People in the media talk about our recent home form as if we've only been crap for the last couple of seasons and yet as Eric shows, it's far worse than that - someone like Perry Ng is just coming up to four years at the club and has never known a time when Cardiff City Stadium was remotely like a "hard place to come to" as has been claimed by many victorious visiting managers since fans were allowed back into games after Covid.

What's the breakdown of those 80 goals in 80 games?
How many times have fans gone home without seeing us score?

If you figure in the conciliation goals in the last few minutes then this figure will be huge.

There’s 23 clubs who would strongly disagree with you.

We've failed to score in 30 of those 80 games. We've scored 3 or more goals in 4 of those 80 games.

We've kept 21 clean sheets. We've conceded 3 or more goals in 11.

We've scored 1 in 27 of those games, winning 9, drawing 9 and losing 9!

33% of our wins have been by 2 goals or more. 44% of our defeats have been by 2 goals or more.

We've scored first in 28 games and conceded first in 48 games.

                        Of the 48 games where we've conceded first, we've won 5 (10.4%), drawn 6 (12.5%), and lost 37 (77.1%)

                        Of the 28 games where we've scored first, we've won 22 (78.6%), drawn 4 (14.3%) and lost 2 (7.1%)

Those last 2 points are particularly interesting when you consider our main tactic is to be passive until a goal down.

Indeed. Few sides in the Championship have as poor a rate as 35% when it comes to scoring first in matches. It's dreadful, no two ways about it.

If this tactic was supposed to be a success, this is the breakdown of results when we've conceded first at home since 2021/22:

                              Won - 5 (10.4%)
                              Drawn - 6 (12.5%)
                              Lost by 1 goal - 20 (41.7%). 13 of those defeats were 1-0.
Lost by 2 or more goals - 17 (35.4%). We scored 4 goals in those 17 defeats.

In the 37 games we've lost after conceding first, we've only scored in 11, failing to score on 26 occasions.

We've lost by 2 or more goals on 6 more occasions than we've got any sort of result when we've conceded first.

As plans go, not even Baldrick could come up with something so goofy, yet NCB thought it was a masterstroke last season....
