  • 2024 in stats

It might be a surprise to some, but 2024 hasn't been the worst year for results in our history.

We've played a total of 47 league and cup games, winning 15, drawing 7 and losing a hefty 25. Our win percentage of 31.9% is only better than 34 years while our defeat percentage, at 53.2% is our 6th highest in our history over 12 months.

We have scored a dismal 49 goals since New Year's Day 2024 at an average of 1.04 per game, the 5th lowest in our history. We've shipped 85 goals at an average of 1.81. While there are 12 years where we've had a worse goals against average, it's been our worst for letting in goals since 1984.

We've failed to score in 17 games and have scored 3 or more goals in a game on only 2 occasions - our worst here was in 1978 where, apart from a 5-2 win over Sunderland, we failed to score more than 2 in a game for the rest of the year. Even in some of our most dismal seasons we at least scored more than 2 more often.

We've kept 10 clean sheets this year, which isn't too dreadful, but have conceded 2 or more in a game on 25 occasions, which is higher than all bar 7 years.

Our home win percentage is a miserable 39.1%, just in the bottom 20. It may be no surprise that we've lost a whopping 13 home games during the year, shared with only 3 other years, but makes the worst home defeat percentage in our history. It's been the third worst year ever for failing to score at home and the 6th worst for scoring goals. At home, it's been our 6th worst year for conceding goals.

Meanwhile, away from home, we've won 6 out of 24 games at a rate of 25%, which is ranked 45th, so is in the "top half" of all year-long away win percentages. Our scoring rate is 1 per game away from home though we've conceded 38, at an average of 1.58 per game, our 11th worst.

    Overall, a year to forget.

Thanks Eric, always an interesting read. Out of interest, do you know how this roughly compares to all our full years since the return to the second tier (2004-2024)?

Yep, I just put these figures into a spreadsheet and the “ end of season result” autofilled with “relegation Easter Monday”

I then added a scenario with a 10 goal striker signing, and was pleased to see “survival Easter Monday”.

Indeed. Dalman will announce it soon “Behold, a saviour shall arrive. Look for his star rising from the general direction of Belgium….”
