The show is looking a bit tired with some pretty average acts thinking they're all this and that.

He's had a few too which doesn't help and now he's even got the gardeners on FFS!

    Happy New Year everyone 🥳

    Oh and ....."SLUDGE IS INNOCENT!!!"

Edit: The bright elusive butterfly of love 👏 👏 👏

It was filmed about 2 weeks ago with lots of prep and choreography to make it look as live as possible. But the staginess and lack of real spontaneity comes through. Although it still manages to produce the best New Year TV party around - even with the cringiest bits.

He was as “thick as shit” on Who Wants to be a Millionaire

2 lifelines in the first 5 questions

The show is a vehicle for himself and a few of his old pals like Ruby Turner, who he wheels out every year.
The Fall refused to play on the regular Jools show unless it stated in their contract that :
As long as Jools doesn't join in with his boogie woogie shit.

I think that the title of the programme hints that it's a Jools Holland show :-)

That's a very literal take I think he's taken full advantage of

But the idea of the show is that he and his band (a considerable ensemble) are central to it and with various guests.

It didn't used to be at all.
There used to be a variety of bands from all genres, some relatively unknown. Jools used to do one duo with a special guest and that was it.
Now, he's in on the act at every possible moment. The process has been gradual over the years to the point where it might as well just be NYE with Jools and his band. Plus the odd guest where Jools will play plinky plonk piano wherever possible

I preferred it when it was more of a knees up type party with some reggae and oldie but goldie artists trotting out their hits from the 60s & 70s.

                            Re: Jools Holland

I've fallen out of enjoyment of Jools H.
There was a time when I looked forward to seeing him live with his band every year at two venues. His set was great as were his albums.
Now, I dislike his set. I find his boogie woogie to be flaccid, forced and flat and pretty well non-existent.
Judging by this year's awful show, he's really porked out and suddenly grown old. The choice of guests was such that I turned it off at 00.05 and stopped recording.
I don't think its me, but the bands I used to so enjoy are poor pastiches from another life, and its a void that hasn't been filled.
