  • Utterly pointless "how did we do on a particular date" thread

More playing about with the old faithful spreadsheet - checking our overall record for each date in the year.

Excluding dates where we've only played once (Covid has made a slight mess in this regard), here's some completely pointless stats....

Best date for results is December 6th. Played 12, won 9, drawn 3.
Worst date for results is October 11th. Played 10, won 2, lost 8.
Best date for scoring is December 6th. Scored 2.33 goals a game on average. Next best is December 7th!!
Worst date for conceding is September 3rd, conceding 2.48 a game on average. Next worst is Christmas Eve.....

Without looking it up and just from memory, I recall we played West Ham at home. Sure it was October 11th Earnie put us 2 up, but Defoe scored a hat trick to scupper us.

I so wish that had been correct. Unfortunately that match was on Tuesday 23 September, 2003.

I decided to look up that date to see if there was anything of interest. It turns out there is. We've played 6 league cup fixtures on 23 September down the years. These are the results.

        23 Sep 1964 Southampton (A) L 2-3
        23 Sep 1980 Barnsley (A) L 2-3
        23 Sep 2003 West Ham United (H) L 2-3
        23 Sep 2008 Swansea City (A) L 0-1
        23 Sep 2009 Aston Villa (A) L 0-1
        23 Sep 2014 AFC Bournemouth (H) L 0-3

Definitely a league cup match. A belter as well, live on Sky. David James got taunted throughout, Earnie scored a belter, they had a penalty which should never have been. If we'd have gone in 2-0 up at half time we'd have won that tie.

              Edit: found the highlights. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI74azhqd0g

Thanks Eric. The reason I thought it was Oct 11th, is that’s my mates birthday and i thought that was the game we’d seen that day.I’ve been wrong all these yrs 😂

This may be a surprise (it certainly was to me), that our last fixture on October 11th was back in 1988, when we lost 4-1 to QPR at home in the League cup.

October 11th has been an international fixture date for years now. I know this cos it’s my birthday :hehe: wales always seem to play on it.
