  • Cardiff Stadium

So probably a fair few know about the 'White City' stadium on Sloper Road which used to stage speedway, greyhound racing and, I think, Rugby League at some time.

But has anyone ever heard or read about the Cardiff Stadium, in Clive Road ? Not me !

Cardiff Stadium, Clive Street, Grangetown: a race for boys on Galloway ponies, and the 'Half Mile Handicap' final, 29/5/1912, won by the renowned – and ageing - Harry Cullum.

that's interesting, Ive got a bunch of old maps of Cardiff, and I can't see anything like that on Clive Street so far.

there was one the other side of the railway line, closer to penarth road, perhaps that was it

no apparently it was only there for 15 years and it fell between maps - it was where Clive Street becomes South Clive Street apparently. was demolished in 1927

That would be on the Marl.

                Found it.
Actually it was basically directly underneath south Clive street, so what would become the marl would be a little to the east.

It's fascinating looking back at old maps. Jealous of distant future generations who will be able to click through on Google Street view. Assuming it's all backed up somewhere.

There’s a Stadium Close off Penarth Rd, used to be a speedway stadium there. Demolished in 1969 apparently but the name lives on.

There was a GKN sports club on the land opposite Seven Oaks Park which in a previous life was a stadium. There’s a housing estate built on that land around 1985 iirc

Great facilities there, football pitches, rugby pitches, cricket squares, tennis courts, bowling green etc. Clubhouse and a large functions room. I think steelworkers at both GKN & GKIS (later British Steel) had a tanner a week voluntary stopped out of their wages towards the upkeep. Must have been about 5000 employed there.

Such a shame those works grounds have gone. British Ropes on Western Avenue, Wiggins Teape on Mill Rd, Ely, Civil Service Ground on Sanatorium Rd, Spillers (where Caerau (Ely) play now. All distant memories:cry:

yes one of the most immediately obvious changes as you look through old maps of Cardiff is the disappearance of large industrial sites employing thousands of people.

I used to love that place. My dad worked at East Moors steelworks for quite a few years so was a member there.
I played football there often and the pitches were probably better looked after than the local parks pitches.
I also had my engagement party there . frighteningly that was now getting on for 50 years ago!!!
