      I do the bridge mostly after dark; it's hard work the M50 way.

      Google mostly prefers the M5 too.

      In answer to the original post, agree it seems to go on forever!

        The M50/A40/A449 way can get very foggy at night as well - especially in late Autumn. I remember a number of occasions in the late 80s/early 90s coming back from Devils away games about midnight and finding it difficult to see the turn off at some of the roundabouts.

          I travelled up & down that road from Monmouth to Redditch, every work day for 22 years. Dull yes, but it made my career possible.

              Welcome to my world. I must admit my route to all home matches is horrible after the clocks change. Given where I live the route is A458...A449...M5...M50 etc. Followed by "is it 20mph here, maybe 30mph..hang on did that sign say 20?" when you get to Cardiff. A journey that gets less appealing as you get older. I've never measured it but someone once posted on here that it's 8 miles longer over the bridge. Nothing worse than going home in the dark/rain and, sometimes, ice. Unlight roads with roundabouts. Whichever way, not much fun. Unless you beat the Jacks!

                Ffing Pencraig for the speed cameras. Herefordshire police money making machine, especially in the Monmouth direction

                  Sorry, but you’re still wrong. You’re getting the A40 and the A449 mixed up. Your route would be:

                  M4 -> A449 -> A40 -> M50 -> M5 -> M6 -> A556 -> M56 -> A5103

                  The A449 becomes the A40 after the Rhaglan junction. So, there are no roundabouts on the A449 other than the one at Celtic Manor where you got on.

                    So on reflection, there is a roundabout on the A449.

                      In a roundabout way, yes.

                        The A449 runs from Zooport to Raglan and then from Ross to the M50 (and then onwards to Stafford). The A40 is the bit from Raglan to Ross. After Ross its back to the A449.

                          ...and don't I know it. There was even a hand held speed camera just round the bend as you drop down towards Ross one day. 4.30pm on a Sunday as it was getting dark. Also, the bottom of the hill, in the Ross direction, used to be a happy hunting ground for police patrol cars. As is the M5 southbound on a Saturday morning where unmarked police cars ply their trade.Throw in the contraflow for the landslide outside Monmouth and, maybe, 8 miles more via the bridge isn't such a bad idea. Just seems to take ages that way.

                            It’s quicker going over the bridge

                              ...in a coach. A few minutes quicker in a car if you know which lanes to get into at the roundabouts. I might try each way for the Bristol match just for the sheer hell of it.
