  • Defeats by 2 or more goals

One of the criticisms of Erol Bulut was the number of games we lost by 2 or more goals - it wasn't so much the first goal that decided games under him, but the second. I had a glance and noticed that such a trend has been adopted by Omer Riza - 6 of his 8 defeats have been by 2 or more goals, including last Saturday's close encounter.

Anyway, here's a table showing the top 10 worst managers and their defeat percentages by 2 goals or more....

    Bartley Wilson 88.2%
    Omer Riza 75.0%
    Erol Bulut 73.3%
    Phil Neal 68.8%
    Ben Watts-Jones 67.1%
    Jimmy Goodfellow 63.6%
    Paul Trollope 62.5%
    Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 62.5%
    Trevor Morris 61.0%
    Alan Durban 60.0%

Free coconut to the person who can guess which City manager has the best record in terms of losing the fewest games as a percentage by 2 goals or more; clue - 18 defeats, of which only 5 were by 2 goals or more (not Billy McCandless).

Malky Mackay? No, I think that's wrong as he must have lost more than eighteen games. Can't remember too many heavy defeats under Russell Slade, but, again, I would have thought he would have lost more than eighteen games. Alan Cork?

Malky lost 35 games and 18 of those were by 2 goals or more, though 7 were in the Premier League. That surprised me a little.

12 of Slade's 27 defeats were by 2 or more. Maybe surprisingly Alan Cork's side lost 11 of their 22 defeats by 2 or more.

Closest so far. He lost 8 games, 3 by more than a single goal. All 5 single goal defeats under Ayre were 2-1.

Not sure if this is a clue or not, from Billy Ayre, here's the list without the one with the lowest:

              Billy Ayre 37.5%
              Frank O'Farrell 36.4%
              Billy McCandless 36.4%
              Steve Morison 33.3%
Mark Hudson 28.6% (I had to double check that, 7 defeats, only 2 by 2 goals or more)
              ??????? 27.8%

You'll probably find it's a trend accross the Championship, probably related to growing gaps between the top and the bottom of the league due to modern finance and parachute payments.

Ole was in the Premier League when we were dropping and Trollope didn't have a clue.

Yet Steve Morison and Mark Hudson have two of the lowest three percentages.

Hudson was defensive and we didn't score enough, so maybe one goal loses and draws, can't really remember what Morison tried to do.

We've had some dross Managers lately and lots of them.
