It's because the Welsh have a better ear for music.

Our version scans much better. "Team" should not take 2 syllables.

However I should also point out that "You'll never notice how much I love you" should be "You'll never know, dear, how much I love you." The meaning is quite different.

I’ve always put it down to wanting to be very clear that we know we aren’t the best team at rugby, ice hockey, etc.
