Birmingham’s 2-0 victory at Blackpool this evening means they have broken the record for the highest number of points in an EFL season.

With one game to go, they have reached 108 points, which tops Reading’s previous record of 106 achieved in 2005/06.

Interesting to note that the two sides automatically promoted from League One this season weren’t in the division last season.

Interesting to note that the two sides automatically promoted from League One this season weren’t in the division last season.

It will be very interesting to how both Birmingham and Wrexham fair in the championship.

Lots of hype about Wrexham, certainly in Wales, ‘Can they go straight through the Championship to the Prem?’ etc. While Birmingham have quietly finished about 20 points above them.

I had a look earlier at the Birmingham squad. They have 13 players who have started 20 or more League One games this season. Five of their mainstays were members of the team that got relegated from the Championship last season, while their keeper is none other than Ryan Allsop. They spent money last summer on a few players, but the only big fees appeared to be for Jay Stansfield (£15 million from Fulham) and Christoph Klarer (£3.5 million from Darmstadt). At first glance there doesn't appear any other players in the squad that cost them a large transfer fee (but I might have missed some).

I didn't recognise many names in their squad and most of those I did know (Lyndon Dykes, Grant Hanley, Lukas Jutkiewicz, Dion Sanderson) didn't start many matches this season.

Birmingham have played 45 League One games this season. They've won 33 of those and lost just three. They've managed to amass a record-breaking tally of 108 points.

Their goalkeeper for 37 of those 45 games was Ryan Allsop.

Although it's not the kind of information that will be easily available, it would be interesting to know how much clubs like Cardiff and Plymouth will have spent on their squads in terms of transfer fees (and signing-on fees, wages, etc) by the time next season starts.

For instance, I wonder how many of next season's League One clubs will have players in their squads that they bought for the kind of fees we paid for the likes of Daland, Fish, Robertson, Robinson, Salech, Simic and Turnbull?

The fees we paid for those players were not especially large by Championship standards, but will many (if any) other League One clubs have paid such fees for their players?

looking back at the transfers in and out from that division, it's pretty rare for any clubs to spend over £1m on a player. Birmingham have about 5 or 6 of the top 20 highest fees ever paid in that division.

According to transfermarkt, the £1.7m we paid for Peter Thorne in league 2 back in 2001 would still be in the top 10 most expensive transfers in league 1.
is it still the highest ever transfer fee paid by a league 2 side? quite possibly.

Definitely not, on account of the fact that we were a League One side (or Division Two as it was then) when we signed Thorne.
