People can talk about pace or needing players who can do X, Y or Z, but this is the single most important thing we need to address this summer IMO.
It’s only at Cardiff where you go from having a squad of big, technically limited, long ball orientated, physical battlers with a fetish for set pieces that were moderately successful, but getting worse through the full 180 degrees to arrive at being precious, “after you”, bottlers, capable of occasionally playing “nice” football, who are a soft touch at set pieces and generally lack the strength to fight their way out of a wet paper bag without thinking to stop off somewhere in between those two complete contrasts.

Yup, you cannot legislate against pace. A manager can have his defence well-drilled, but pace will always open them up.
When was the last time we had someone with real pace....Josh Murphy/ NML?
Our problem has been we've just relied on a single speed merchant, rather than having 3-4 seriously fast players in the team together.

For Riza add Bulut and Ramsey. The club and it's recruitment appear to have deliberately moved from bringing in the pragmatic, industrious and strong player that formed the cornerstone of City's squad for several years. Ironically, just as the club is making a concerted effort to be as delightfully pattern-weaving as possible, the football world has started to return to a more direct, counter-attacking culture with speed and strength at the core.

          Buckingham 11-8.

          Ramsey 8-1

          Evatt 10-1.

I know that you're dead against Des Buckingham, But he's had an intereting career to date, did really well in New Zealand across all age groups nationally and at club level. And he's got a 1980s self employed Driving instructors name, what's not to like

Sean Dyche was talking about this the other week on Gary Neville's podcast. For the last 10 years, clubs everywhere have tried to copy Pep Guardiola's approach, but they're now starting to realise that it doesn't work unless your Man City and you have the players - and budget - to make it work. And even then, opponents can get something if they're disciplined, sit deep, and don't press.

Chasing that style of play is only going to be counterintuitive for us. The key is to be able to mix things up. Play from the back when the opportunity is there, but don't be afraid to be direct and turn opponents quickly. That requires coaching players to think critically and assess each situation on its merit, as opposed to playing like a robot in a system. And it seems like modern coaches don't want to do that, because they see Vincent Kompany landing the Bayern job even though his team got relegated.

As Dyche said, if I was an owner and I asked a potential coach what his philosophy is, the only answer I'd be looking for is a simple one: to win.

He also turned Josh Murphy's career around

Did he or did Liam Manning?

How much of Oxfords success was down to Buckingham. He was sacked after about a year. They were 2nd when Manning left and he took over. They went up through the play offs.

Rowett also turned around Oxford pretty quickly when Buckingham was relieved of duties.

We are probably going cheap. He may get it. If he does lets hope he is a good coach who Oxford were foolish to let go.

Otherwise Tuertos mate may get his wish and it will Ramasut to get his chance in November.🤣

Looks like Plymouth losing their manager. They will still hire a new one before us.

He wasn't bad actually, I'd take him here. Rooney was the problem at Plymouth.

This could prove to be a big problem next season in League 1, where the players will have to battle and "win the right to play".

I don't know anything about the type of football we will have to face next year, so I am basing that on some of the comments from contributors on here. However, I can imagine that there are a lot of honest footballers who have to fight every week to earn their money.

Based off what the League 1 playoffs showed, the drop off in standard is monumental.

Our squad now should be more than good enough for a top 10 finish.
