Have to remember both Yank spelling and Yank words.

Like many words in currency in US English it's a word once used in Blighty a couple of centuries ago and fell into disuse here - and such a phenomenon is usually due to language among small populations (such as the original colonies) changing slower than large populations from whence the language came.
