  • Football Governance Bill

Passed by Parliament this evening with no amendments. And with a huge majority

Great news for football fans everywhere as it means that clubs have far stricter requirements to consult with their organised elected fans groups on a number of important matters. They also have to evidence to the Independent Regulator that they have taken fans views into account in those consultations

    Good news.

This feels like the sort of change that club owners and boards have not really understood yet - but could be revolutionary.

I suppose it depends on the willingness of the Regulator to make very big waves?

The new obligations on clubs are actually written into the legislation rather than at the discretion of the Regulator. The Regulator (which will be a department made up of about 40 to 50 people) just has to monitor compliance. If clubs break the rules they face the very real risk of having their Licence to operate as a football club removed. Also fans will have the right to contact the Regulator direct if their club is not complying.

Let's hope this makes a difference. It certainly needs to.

The Lib Dems amendment to make some premier league matches free to air was defeated then?

Credit where credit is due, Labour did put this in their manifesto.

Now let’s hope the Regulator really is independent - they’ll need to be.

Thank God, no need whatsoever. Terrible suggestion.

True, but the Tories were already putting it through,so both major parties deserve credit.

I'm not sure whether Labour made many changes though. I believe there were a few.

                      Perhaps Keith will know?

Wonderful news. Hopefully continuing the excellent work done by all the other Government backed regulators.

Seems like great news but I haven't read much on the substance within it. What specifically does it change?

I think I would advocate for more radical change in football but I assume it's a step in the right direction.

                            You're right enough.

I went and read about it later and saw that the Tories introduced it at the beginning of 2024 but there was no appetite for it.
