  • Lincoln Red Imps...

...are playing in the Europa League this evening (losing 0-2 at HT) at home to Sporting Braga.

Lincoln City are the 'The Imps' which I'd always thought was a silly nickname, but the Lincoln Red Imps intrigued me enough to look them up:

They're from from Gibraltar, which is tiny, just 2.6 square miles and shares ONE pitch (Victoria Stadium) with all other eleven teams!

Unsurprisingly, the team is named after Lincoln City FC, who are nicknamed the "Imps" after the legend of the Lincoln Imp. Lincoln Red Imps received their name after they were sponsored by Reg Brealey, a former Sheffield United chairman and Lincoln resident.

Why are Lincoln City called the Imps? Well, after the legend of the Lincoln Imp of course; the team sport the imp on their badge, and the symbol has become synonymous with the club – even their mischievous mascot, Poacher, is an imp

Apparently there's a carving of an Imp in Lincoln Cathedral and legend has it that one day the Devil was in a frolicsome mood and sent two naughty creatures to cause mischief on Earth. After allegedly stopping at Chesterfield, twisting the spire of St Mary and All Saints Church, the two imps went to Lincoln to wreak havoc in the city's Cathedral.

    So now you know...

Another unusual club that plays in Europe is FC Sheriff Tiraspol.
They play in the Modovan League although they are located in the pro-Russian, rebel-held area of Transnistria, which separates Moldova from Ukraine. The current political stand-off follows a war between Moldova and the separatists.

The club was formed by ex-KGB officers and the Sheriff company that controls the club has a monopoly on the major components of the economy in Transnistria. Only a minority of the players are Moldovans and their squad has 4 Brazilians in it, an Israeli, a Colomboan and a number of Africans.

The Transnistrian flag is a rarity is still having a hammer and sickle on it. From my experience in passing through the place a number of years ago in heading to Ukraine from Moldova, I can confirm that it had a very 'Soviet' feel and even its own currency. ATMs and shops didn't not accept foreign currency nor credit/debit cards and the only way to obtain currency was in the banks - although maybe it has changed.
