  • Joe Bugner RIP

An enigma who had the physical attributes to be a World Champion, but, mentally, you wondered if he was made fox boxing. Never embarrassed in a big fight, but, from memory, never threatened to win one either.

    RIP

Didn’t he take the British Title from Henry Cooper? Very controversial points decision, Cooper was very upset over it, it sort of overshadowed Bugner’s subsequent career.

I remember my mum being upset about that. I had no idea she was a boxing fan before that.

He was a big tease, looked the part but came up short every time he had a big fight. Henry Cooper notwithstanding.

Cooper retired after that fight, and the country, in general, never forgave Bugner

              He wasn't YTHAT bad.
Bugner twice held the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles and was a three-time European heavyweight champion.

He faced Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier in back-to-back bouts in 1973, before facing Ali again - for the world title - in 1975.
Former British heavyweight boxer Joe Bugner - who faced Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier - has died at the age of 75.
