  • Anyone remember Bobby Brown?

He only played for us over a couple of seasons (1966-67 and 1967-68) but suffered a serious knee injury against Aston Villa and eventually retired. He was an England amateur international and scored 2 goals against Brazil when representing Great Britain at the 1960 Rome Olympics. He eventually scored 4 goals over the 3 games, including 1 against Italy. He was offered the chance to join AC Milan but chose to tour Australasia with the FA XI. When he returned the AC Milan manager had left the club due to ill-health, so the move to Italy never happened.

Sorry, I'm rambling a bit. He's 85 now and a few years ago published his autobiography, All he can do is score goals - The life and times of Bobby Brown, with a limited print run.

Just wondering if anyone has come across the book. I'd love to be able to buy a copy, but haven't been able to track one down...

He was a damned good player for us, old fashioned centre forward. 24 goals in 50 appearances. I was at the game he got injured in, and remember him waving as he was stretchered off. So sad he never played again, he was only 27 at the time.

Yes, I was there too. He wasn't at the club long but he left a lasting impression with me.

I have a personal memory of him and it's not a good one. I was in the White Hart pub in St Mellons in the very early 70's and stood at the bar no more than a yard from my seat, which had my jacket draped over the back. My mate was sat opposite. Bobby Brown, who I recognised immediately, went to pick up my chair for himself, so I told him it it was mine. He sarcastically replied, "Sorry, I didn't see your name on it".

He was excellent for City, sad he didn’t have longer with us.

A signed, pre-owned, copy of the book is available on Ebay.

I was mid way between the Canton Stand and halfway line on the Bob Bank when he did the injury. I heard the crack clearly when it happened.

Glad to hear he's still alive.

Remember at Ashton Gate, the Wurzel fans singing ‘Let’s all drink to the death of Bobby Brown’ to the strains of The Kinks ‘Death of a clown’.
In later years him & Ronnie Bird were involved at Cae’r Castell Youth Club. One anecdote, a young, perhaps, about 14 year old girl asked him if he had the time, he replied ‘If you’ve got the inclination’. Us who heard it had no clue what inclination meant

Wasn't he the one that got Whitney into drugs?

Can’t remember the name of it, or it’s exact location, but had a drink & meal in his pub down west Wales about 30 odd years ago.

                    Great host

He tried to take your seat with your jacket draped over it? Weird.

Thanks for the 'head's up' - just ordered it.

There's another one there, if anyone's interested.

Wasn’t at the Villa Boxing Day game, so my main memory of Bobby Brown was the great goal he scored against Palace in an early season night game we won 4-2. I remember him as being a step up in ability from the likes of Terry Harkin and George Andrews - we probably would never have signed Brian Clark if Brown had not suffered his injury.
