  • Dickie Bird gone

92 years old. Fantastic umpire and a great character.
Got a great picture of him umpiring a Glamorgan 2xi game at my club ground in Pontypridd, which seemed a bit surreal as he was a top test umpire at that time.
    RIP Dickie.

I heard he gave someone out LBW once, but I don’t believe it.

RIP to someone who absolutely lived the game of cricket.

That was David Shepherd who was superstitious about scores of 111 (known as Nelson) and it's multiples.
Dickie Bird was a hell of a character mind, and no-one dated to answer him back.

          Great character.
          Barnsley fan wasn’t he?

There is a fantastic statue of Dickie Bird in Barnsley - in his cap with jumpers tied around his waist - raising his finger to give a batsman out.

One of a kind - unique. But he had a good innings!

Great umpire , not that the standard was much cop during his era , especially biased umpires away from home.

I wonder how he would have handled DRS

              RIP

On a separate note this is worth a listen

              Sir Geoffrey at his best.
