  • Centre back combo

We've started matches this season with all 6 possible combinations of our 4 CBs. This is how they've done:

Lawlor Fish Played 6 Conceded 2
    Fish Chambers 3 3
    Lawlor Chambers 2 0
    Osho Lawlor 2 3
    Fish Osho 1 3
    Osho Chambers 1 0

Would we be better off with a stable, regular pairing?
    Who would you pick?

    Lawlor / Fish.

Oshos had a shocker yesterday. But hopefully its just a bad day. However Fish deserves his place and Osho will have to wait for his chance.

The first time I saw Osho I said he'd be a perfect central midfielder. I've seen nothing to cause me to change my mind on that. For me it would be a Lawlor / Fish centre-back partnership.

        I agree.

From his record it is clear that Osho is a good player who has had a few recent shockers - but based on game performances the pairing (baring injuries or suspensions) should be Fish and Lawlor.

Fish should be first choice, and then Lawlor. Fish is streets ahead in my opinion.

I’ve posted a couple of times that I think he’d be most effective as a midfielder, he’s certainly got a burst of pace in him which I believe starting from a more advanced position could be a big plus. Neither Wintle or Turnbull has anything like that in their locker. Any lackadaisical bollocks he drops in an advanced position would hopefully be tidied up by defenders behind him.

I couldn’t believe he left Osho on yesterday. Surely when a player is having that much of a mare you bring him off for his own confidence as much as for the good of the team.

Based on performance fish is clearly the no.1 centre half - for all lawlor’s qualities.

Jason Perry on the radio commentary thought it would do him more harm than good to be taken off straight or soon after his mistake. Can see the argument, but it would have been far worse if he'd given another one away which he nearly did.

In retrospect, Jason Perry is correct (I was calling for Osho to be hooked in the match-day thread :hehe: ).
BBM must have given it some thought at the time, but he made the right decision to keep Osho on.
If Osho had been taken off his confidence would have been in tatters.
Osho has a decent turn of pace, can push forward with the ball, and his distribution is generally sound (yeah, I know!).
Some on this forum have suggested trying him in midfield, I think this is not a bad call. You never know, he might weigh in with a goal or two (imagine how that would boost his confidence!).

I think Chambers should come back in to relieve Colwill of the captaincy.
                      Question is Defence or midfield?

                        Re: Centre back combo

I don't think Osho has ever played as a 6, I'm assuming when people say midfield they don't mean any further forward.

I'm not sure why we would play him in midfield, at 27 he's clearly a cb who can apparently cover at full back.

Seems to have played a lot in a back 3.

His short passing (generally) looks ok, decent enough pace but playing even in defensive midfield would be quite different workload. Getting up and down the pitch, going short for the ball, continually keeping the moves ticking. Wintle covers a hell of a lot of ground.

Maybe if it was a more flat 4231, he could mostly cover but I just don't see someone like BBM using him there. We haven't even put Chambers there.

                          Re: Centre back combo

I think we have four quality centre backs at the club, and we’re going to need them all over the course of the season. Which is the best pairing? That’s hard to say, probably Fish/Lawlor, but that’s only after Osho’s bad day on Saturday. However, I also think that the last few games have shown that sides know to crowd us out of midfield, and so we may need to look at playing 3-5-2 to even things up. Three centre-backs?

Lalwor and Fish are the strongest defensively and have been key in some of our best victories, probably because their presence builds confidence. The 4–0 win over Plymouth stands out, along with a few others I can’t recall right now.
