Had never heard of Cloudflare anywhere else, until I read this article about today’s outage, and the boss of it is mentioned at the start

Cloudflare acts as a barrier. Mostly invisible unless there's an overload or a security issue and then you make it visible and more difficult to get past (which is what we've had in the past week). The shutters came up as there was unwanted traffic trying to overload the board. So the verification barrier was put in place.

It's massive and millions of websites use it.
