Re: Wrexham player punches City fan
Yeah, I did note that the fan did not want to press charges. However, and I am not judging, but if it had been two fans involved, would it have been the same outcome?Originally posted by TheBirchgrovePub View PostThe fact the fan didnÂ’t want to press charges speaks volumes. Obviously got carried away and was put in his place.
Non story by the sounds of it apart from a case of severe embarrassment for the fan

Further down in that article it shows him refusing to join in the remembrance day hug. W*nker - doesn't he know that load of Paddies fought and died in WWI? (Also in WWII, though ROI officially stayed neutral)Originally posted by KingOfSiamIAm View PostApologies if there has already been a thread about this. I did a quick look but couldn’t see one.

Re: Wrexham player punches City fan
Sounds like assault to me you can't just punch people over words.
His refusal to partake in poppy day remembrance is quite understandable to me he is from Derry and is from the same estate as people that were murdered in the bloody Sunday peace March.

Agreed, I don't know why people get worked up about it. Good for him, he's true to his beliefs.Originally posted by insider View PostSounds like assault to me you can't just punch people over words.

I can't work out from the various press reports if the punch landed, or did any damage - but I agree it sounds like assault, even if there is a 'self defence' justification.Originally posted by insider View PostSounds like assault to me you can't just punch people over words.

I also can never understand why the police (any UK police) seem to need an incident reported to them before they will get involved, if they don't witness it themselves or via CCTV etc. This incident is all over the press - so they know what is alleged to have happened and they know James McClean's version of events. The fact the Cardiff fan(s) have not made a complaint sort of back's up McClean's story.
I admire McClean's stance on the poppy and his willingness to take more than a decade of threats and abuse because of Bloody Sunday. He can be a shit-house at times on the pitch (maybe off it, I don't know), but his stance on that takes courage.
I used to wear a red poppy (my other half still does), but the last 10-15 years I have opted for a white poppy. Thank you Benjamin Zephaniah for pointing me in that more comfortable direction.

Read up on the reasons he doesn’t. Well within his rights as is anyone to refuse to wear one.Originally posted by bobh View PostFurther down in that article it shows him refusing to join in the remembrance day hug. Re: Wrexham player punches City fan
I admire Maclean and his principals immensely. So what if Irish folk fought in the wars, his folk were bullied and a lot worse than that by the British army. The man had the bollocks to stand up for what he believes in. No doubt the prick that he punched joins in with the anti English chants our numbnuts sing, maybe even gives a rendition of ‘Lizzie’s in a box’ at Wales games as well. We’ve got some shite following us haven’t we. I’m not a poppy fan either, it’s not for me.Originally posted by bobh View PostFurther down in that article it shows him refusing to join in the remembrance day hug. I wear a poppy in remembrance of anybody that’s lost their lives in any war anywhere.Originally posted by splott parker View PostI admire Maclean and his principals immensely. McClean refuses to wear one because of his stance against the Brits, That’s his right of course, but a bit hypocritical imo that he chooses to earn his living here.

Re: Wrexham player punches City fan
James McClean on punching a Cardiff fan:
"What happened was I got out of my car in the players' car park. Somehow, there were four male Cardiff fans, also late 20s, early 30s. They recognised me [and] immediately started running their mouths off at me. I ignored the first jibe. The second, I responded to, and I confronted them about it.
"Words were said. One of them, a tall chap with glasses, made a hostile move towards me. Like I've told you in previous interviews, Jim, I'm in my workplace, and I feel I should never feel threatened in that workplace. So instead, I wasn't waiting for him to make the first swing. So I did. Four men, one of me.
People need to understand just because we play football doesn't mean people can try and take liberties without their actions having consequences. That was it. Nothing further happened. And the situation was dealt with. I hope that helps."

Re: Wrexham player punches City fan
Fair point but maybe he's not hostile to all Brits but only the army personnel who were in direct conflict with him and his kind. Maybe he'd get on well with me and you.Originally posted by William Treseder View PostI wear a poppy in remembrance of anybody that’s lost their lives in any war anywhere.

Also, couldn't we make the same argument for Brits working in Germany maybe?
