Reggae great. The iconic film "The Harder They Come" also showed him as a decent actor. The soundtrack, with several of his great songs but also artists like Toots and the Maytals and Desmond Decker is a masterpiece. Sadly missed.

Re: Jimmy Cliff RIP
My impression was that they had equal media coverage - but maybe I look at different parts of the media and social media than you?Originally posted by pomeroy View PostIn a week when a B list reggae singer dies and it makes headline news the iconic bassist of The Stone Roses , Mani dies and gets barely a mention. Mani should have been born in Jamaica!
I also guess this is a generational thing.
Jimmy Cliff's music was a big part of my early life (B list - really?), but I had never heard of Mani until he died. The Stone Roses, yes, but not the individual band members. Just not on my radar!

Same as me, I’ve heard of the Stone Roses but no clue as to their line up. Jimmy Cliff was/is a lot more relevant to me.Originally posted by jon1959 View PostMy impression was that they had equal media coverage - but maybe I look at different parts of the media and social media than you?

Re: Jimmy Cliff RIP
I’m 81 so it might not be a generational thing. My early idols were Chuck Berry, Bb King, Clapton, Buddy Guy, Steve Winwood etc. great musicians who could fill stadia, something that I wouldn’t attribute to Jimmy Cliff. Incidentally I thought Billy Ocean had a far better voice than Jimmy. All a matter of opinion. My opinion is that the best band bar none at the moment is Tedeschi Trucks the band that has evolved a lot from the Allman Brothers, now there’s an iconic bunch of musicians for you.Originally posted by jon1959 View PostMy impression was that they had equal media coverage - but maybe I look at different parts of the media and social media than you?

I have to credit the great Vic Parker with my love of the blues, those nights in the Glamorgan Arms, Butetown I will remember always.
The Council has missed a trick by not erecting a statue of Vic in the Bay!

Re: Jimmy Cliff RIP
Vic was a stalwart of The Quebec, Crichton St (more or less where Callaghan Sq is now, Custom House one end, Glendower the other, Quebec in the middle).Originally posted by pomeroy View PostI’m 81 so it might not be a generational thing. Re: Jimmy Cliff RIP
Interesting. From what you have described I don't think I experienced as much live music as you in my early years (I am 66 - so half a generation apart!). Sound quality (including vocals) depended on tinny transistor radios, which was a great leveller, and in my case what I heard on Piccadilly Radio's James Stannage show late at night (the John Peel of Manchester!).Originally posted by pomeroy View PostI’m 81 so it might not be a generational thing. I lived in north Cheshire in my teens, before moving to Bristol to go to college. That was when my live music life really started, and it was mostly punk and reggae.
Thinking about the Stone Roses, I did have Ian Brown as a distant ping on my music radar, but he was the only one.

This is genuinely one of the most bizarre (and inaccurate) posts I can recall seeing on this message board, and that’s going some.
