  • Leicester City management compared to City and Vincent Tan

Congrats to Leicester City for adding an FA Cup trophy to their Premiership title. Success is not limited to the so-called BIg SIX and their absentee landlords.

The celebrations of the Leicester players after their victory deliberately included their chairman who has clearly bonded with players and fans alike. There is something special going on there - in stark contrast to these days of overseas owners and their greed in attempting to form their own league as a money-making exercise which alienated fans and players. And the bond between the chairman's family and club has been strengthened by the genuine outpouring of emotion after that terrible helicopter crash.

How do we think Vincent Tan and his management compares with the Leicester model?

Tan's made some bad decisions based on his own strange-to-us feelings and beliefs. He's taken umbrage at the nasty attacks on him by City fans. He's also been absent from 99% of games over the last few years. But he's also been there at the ground sharing in the success of promotions and has tried to fratenise with fans. Although there is a mixed viewof his support of the club, most balanced fans feel he's been a good owner in terms of the supply of funds. But he is well-short of the adulation and love showered on Aiyawatt 'Top' Srivaddhanaprabha on Saturday.

The only thing these guys have in common is that they're both from the far east. Vincent Tan doesn't love Cardiff City. He doesn't respect Wales, Cardiff, or its people. He doesn't understand what a football club is or what it means. He's just rich. And he hasn't/doesn't even use his wealth wisely. He's a ****ing clown.

Re: Leicester City management compared to City and Vincent Tan

When I used to write a weekly column for the Echo a few years back, I can remember getting terrible stick on AnoTHeR board for comparing Cardiff City's ownership pretty unfavourably with Leicester's in one of my pieces. In particular, Leicester had turned their club debt into equity and, despite promises at the time that we would follow suit, nothing had happened. Of course, Vincent Tan has since started the process, but, as far as I'm aware, the major part of the conversion to the sum of £60 to £70 million has still not gone through and, given what we're being told about the impact of the pandemic on Mr Tan's businesses, it seems unlikely that it will happen in the next few years.

Leicester's recruitment department is, rightly, recognised as being up there with the best and there has been a steady stream of Academy players making the breakthrough into the first team under Brendan Rodgers when they've tended to be in and around the top six of the Premier League (e.g. Chilwell, Barnes, Choudhury and Thomas) - there's two on field reasons why they've completely outperformed us in the last decade despite having been in the third tier since we were last there.

In 2004/05, a season after they were relegated from the Premier League, Leicester finished one place above us in 15th. For the next 9 seasons we finished above them in the football pyramid and beat them in the playoffs, FA cup and League cup. We won the Championship in 2012/13. They won it the season after. We plummeted straight back down. They nearly did but stayed up and won the league a year later.

For around a decade we could claim to have been better than Leicester. How things changed, and rapidly!

A rich foreign owner that cares deeply about the club seems quite rare these days. In fact Tan probably has more in common with other owners than the Leicester owner does.

I'd rather Tan than quite a few of the other owners in this and the other leagues.

Have we ever had an owner who has loved Cardiff City?

which clubs DO compare well with Leicester though?
why not compare Tan with Blackburn, Swansea or Sunderland?

neither is we had a background in football prior to coming here afaik. so a lot comes down to the trust in the people they've hired.

on the radio yesterday Andy King was saying that a lot can be traced back to Nigel Pearson when they were in league one putting a lot of things in place behind the scenes, improving sports science, the youth setup and recruitment, which has been the foundation they've built upon.

take Neil Warnock for example, when he turned us from a relegation battle to promotion in 18 months Tan clearly would have thought "great I've finally got someone who knows what they're doing". but in reality we were putting nothing in place to maintain the longer term success of the club.
there was no youth progression, chaotic recruitment and promotion has left us in a weaker position.
