  • John Robertson.

The biggest single reason for Forest’s success under Brian Clough in the late 70s by my reckoning.

Former Scotland, Nottingham Forest and Derby County winger John Robertson - once described by manager Brian Clough as "a Picasso of our game" - dies at the age of 72.

    RIP

Oh no. He was a real gem. They couldn't have done it without him.

He was one hell of a player. At the top of his game he was virtually unplayable.
Didn’t he get sent home from a tournament for failing a drugs test while playing for Scotland?

No, that was the twenty times, at least, sent off Willie Johnstone. Robertson was in the laughing stock Scotland World Cup squad in 1978 for the tournament where Johnstone was sent home though.

Always looked out of shape, nothing like the typical winger yet he invariably ripped full backs to bits. RIP

That's how I remember him too (physical shape). But as you say, he would roast defenders, even the best in Europe.
Did what you want from a winger - went past his marker on the outside, and put in some fantastic balls for the strikers to get on.

Clough used to fondly refer to him as the short fat fella on the wing.
Proper old fashioned winger fantastic player RIP.

He did wonders for some of us amateur wingers where were on the short and stocky side.
