  • Martin Chivers.

Dead at 80, my main memory of him now is of Brian Moore shouting “Chivers on the rampage” on the Big Match and, for a while, he was probably the best centre forward in the country, but, the criticism that used to be directed at him for lacking aggression and a killer instinct seemed a fair one to the teenage me. He was still quite a star when he played for Servette Geneva at Ninian Park in the Cup Winners Cup when, from memory, Richie Morgan marked him out of the game.

    RIP

"Chivers with the long one" is the commentary I remember Bob from Mr Moore (I think it was he) referring to his long throw-ins.

A reason he was a big star was because he played for a London club and Spurs, along with West Ham, were invariably on the Big Match (London weekend television) on Sunday afternoon.

Match of the day and The Big Match were the only football fix available on telly back then, apart from Sportsnight with Coleman.

    RIP

I'd completely forgotten about him playing for Servette. I was also at that game. Prior to that I remember seeing him play for Southampton down the City in the same side as Terry Paine and possibly Mick Channon too. Unfortunately we got beaten 3-5. That was late 1965.

My lasting memory of Martin Chivers was seeing him as a host/ambassador for Tottenham when I got an invite to a Spurs v Wimbledon match in the late 80s/early 90's. Spurs had Lineker and Gazza playing for them at the time.

      RIP Martin

Likewise, I was also at that game and couldn't remember that Chivers was playing for them.

As "MacAdder" pointed out in this thread, London players received a lot of exposure at that time, due to The Big Match being screened every Sunday.

          RIP Martin Chivers

Who's the player in the centre taking a swig from the champagne bottle, is it Keith Pontin?

On reflection, I think you might be right. Pontin would have been taller.

From what I remember the Big Match was regionalised but for some reason we got the London version in South Wales.

Yes. You could get the HTV West too which showed the wurzels and gas games, we had an extra aerial picking this up.
I remember Kevin Mabbutt being the West's Chivers, a BC favourite though more to do with his dashing good looks and tiny shorts than his football.
His brother Gary was far more decorated who ironically played many times for Spurs as did Chivers.

Jeez, hard to believe the things we'd watch to get a football fix!

My grandmother, who lived just around the corner from us in Llandaff North/ Gabalfa, used to have her roof aerial tuned to the West Country (2 of her 3 children lived in Bristol).
I grew up listening to Bruce Hocking and Jan Leeming (she was nice!) hosting the news programme 'Report West'.
Not a lot was really newsworthy back in those days. They'd have a 5 minute feature of regional crime... "In Cirencester, a garden shed was broken into over the weekend and some tools were stolen. Ring this number if you have any information..... ".

They'd always end the programme on a happy note though - showing a cheese rolling festival in Gloucester, or perhaps Morris dancing in Melksham. :hehe:

Wasn’t it ‘Points West’? That was BBC though I think.

Yes, Points West was on BBC, presented by Mark Puckle (God, where did I dig that up from :hehe:). For some reason, we had our aerial pointed towards the west country despite the Wenvoe transmitter only being a couple of miles away!

Strange, looking back how some in South Wales preferred to tune into the West, we had two aerials, one to Wenvoe, one to the West. I can’t imagine many Wurzels had their aerials turned our way. Was it something to do with the odd Welsh language programme appearing on TWW (Wales) therefore not being 100% English speaking? Of course this was all before Taffy Telly (S4C).
