Infantino saying Russia should be allowed back into football?
what's your position on sanctions? that's punishing the civilian population for whatever politicians are doing
It's quite a complex topic for ccmb isn't it. There has to be an argument that it hasn't really helped in this case, if anything further isolating Russia seems to have just cosied them up to China and North Korea and years later they seem happy enough to keep the war going.
There has to be consequences for all actions but i'm not sure stopping a football team, some singers or some athletes in the Olympics makes a blind bit of difference to anyone but those that are being kept from attending.

Are you joking? Complex? There is nothing to great for the minds of here, from politics to medical science….its all covered by the resident experts

Thing is, might be ok for the players, but there’s no way fans of say any top club could safely travel to Russia now, same in reverse also, every far right nutter and hooligan in the uk would head to a game if say spurs or Man City drew Spartan Moscow……

How rude, I'll have you know this messageboard has come up with the fixes for 90% of the world's problems, and 100% of Cardiff City's.
It is complicated yes, personally I think it's necessary though, I don't think business as usual after a country's invaded another one sends the right message at all. Also I'd imagine that it's all part of a soft war approach, along with sanctions etc, to slowly turn the populace of the aggressor against the idea of the war and maybe the government

I don't see anything complicated about it. Russia is the aggressor in a war with its neighbor. A sovereign state that was formerly part of the Soviet Empire. Like Prussia was a part of the German Empire prior to WWI. The Donbas supposedly has many ethnic Russians like the Sudetenland had ethnic Germans prior to WWII. I'm sure you van see where this is going.

We're talking about FIFA here? The home of consistency and integrity?
TBH I don't think they co-ordinate their decisions on bans with the UN - or follow any pattern of sanctions or UN resolutions. They are more likely to make decisions based on the mood of the current recipient of their 'Peace Prize'. If Putin comes off the naughty step it will not be because he has stopped bombing Ukrainian civilians - it will be to please King Don.
Late last year it looked as if UEFA was on the brink of banning Israeli clubs from competitions because of the Gaza genocide. Then King Don claimed a ceasefire (it wasn't) and the news cycle moved on so 'business as usual' became the default. The flip side of FIFA's ban on Russia.
Re: Infantino saying Russia should be allowed back into football?
It's complex in the sense that Russia hosted the World Cup four years after they invaded (checks notes) Ukraine, in 2014. That was back when we didn't give a shit.
When they invaded another part of Ukraine then we decide to kick them out of all sporting and cultural events. In that sense it is very contradictory.
There's also an argument that the principle is applied inconsistently as a great many countries would have been kicked out of world cups and European Championships for invading countries in that case. Indeed, Russia's predecessor - The USSR - would probably never have played in one, and nor for that matter would the US.
It can't go on forever, but I have been comfortable with their exclusion despite the inconsistencies. I found it unfair when individuals were barred from some sports just for being Russian (but representing themselves) but it would have jarred seeing Russia involved in tournaments in the last couple of years. I'm okay with it being a topic of conversation though, and a lot of countries within FIFA are Russian allies at the end of the day.
Dunno what the answer is though. Aside from peace, obviously.

I don’t think people really took much notice of Russia stealing the Crimea or the battles going on along the border until they decided to invade properly in 2022, they even managed to shoot down jumbo jets full of kids and get away with it….
Medvedev is still allowed to compete at Tennis mind, although strangely his form has plummeted since the invasion…….:sherlock:
