  • The Dons....

Having been to the game last night and having a ticket to watch Walsall v MK Dons next Monday (as an acquaintance is a fan of the home side) I needed to refresh my memory about what happened to the intellectual property and history with the original entity known as Wimbledon FC (à la Vinnie Jones and Sam Hammam).

The latter entity was adjudged to have moved to the land of concrete cows in 2003 and were re-branded as MK Dons a year later - whereas AFC Wimbledon was established in 2002 by what had been their Plough Lane fans.

In 2006 and following a legal dispute the intellectual property and medals owned by the former Wimbledon FC were legally assigned to the local authority in Merton (of which Wimbledon is a suburb) and only AFC Wimbledon can now claim the historic honours achieved by the former Wimbledon FC.

And talking of intellectual property disputes, Aberdeen FC, also known as the Dons, lost their claim to register a whisky as
'Dons Dram' - as it was successfully opposed by the Sandeman company which owns the TM 'Don Fino' in respect of sherry.

When we played them in some cup competition, I was sorry I attended, it just didn’t feel right.

They shouldn’t be anywhere near the football

    That’s MK obviously

That 3rd paragraph is the most pertinent.

I think it would be a great show of respect if MK gave up the Dons name. They've got what they most wanted i.e. league status, surely the Dons tag isn't so important as it has no relevance to the town's location and history. On the other hand it probably would help heal a bit of a sore point with Wimbledon fans.

Milton Keynes Cattle could be an interesting name.

I think just Milton Keynes Football Club would be fine. Award Wimbledon the history and the Dons name back, and bury the hatchet.

MKFC would do it fine. I assume their nickname is 'the Dons' but as MK is the home to Bletchley Park they could use their own local history and become 'the code breakers':hehe:

Certainly broke the code for becoming a league club through the usual route

I have never understood the blind loyalty shown by some prominent city fans to the ex chairman, they have castigated the current owner over the red rebrand ( correctly), yet overlook the appalling way Wimbledon were treated by our former chairman.

Lawrie Sanchez talked about this on Undr the Cosh (I think). The team he played for moved first to Crystal Palace then to MK. Apart from distance, there was, for him, no difference. They were still exiled but the same entity. The new club had nothing to do with his career, so technically MK Dons won the FA Cup in '88, or at least have more of a claim. That they've handed over the IP is probably more of a gesture borne out of guilt and trying to make amends. Even the owner regrets the way it was done.

But, as Boanagers says, the rot was in well before the MK move.
