    Re: Accounts

Our accounts and the accounts of many other teams just shows how badly most football clubs are run. SCMP needs to be brought in at all levels as ridiculous spending on wages cannot go on.

I’m watching the View From The Ninian podcast where they’ve just said the accounts show we paid a loan fee of £500,000 for Wilfried Kanga

Is that true? Not saying it isn't, but I thought detailed information on individual fees aren't contained in the annual accounts? But maybe the way they are set out now has changed since the days I used to try to make sense of them.

You can download the accounts for free these days. I just skimmed through the latest accounts and couldn't spot any mention of the Kanga loan fee (or any other loan fee for that matter). But there are 54 pages, so I can't guarantee I didn't miss them.

I can’t remember details of individual transfers being included in the Accounts in the days I used to study them either, but Kanga was the only loan signing we made in the summer of 2024 and so I wonder if it may be able to identify the figure because of that? What I can remember from that summer transfer window was a general feeling that we were “going for it”. Looking at Wikipedia, we paid transfer fees for Robertson, Daland, Fish and Simic during the summer transfer window and then reportedly paid a bigger fee than for any of them for Salech in January 2025. We sold McGuinness and Adams in the summer and Siopis in January, so I’d say that, provided the fee for McGuinness is as big as it was reported then we may have made a small profit in terms of transfer fees.

However, looking at the players we released compared to Chambers, Willock and El Ghazi who may not have cost a transfer fee, but they would have pushed up the wage bill (there were also whatever it cost to bring Alves and Mannsverk here on loan in January).

When you also consider that we were still paying Aaron Ramsey, two things become clear, first our wage bill would increase significantly and second that you can see how the feeling that we were going for it originated. The fact we finished at the bottom of the table is a huge indictment on those in charge of finance and/or recruitment and I’ll need a lot more convincing before I start to believe that the appointment of BBM, who has made a huge difference to whole outlook of the club, was anything but a case of Tan and co getting lucky.

The accounts show no such thing Paul. Total loan fees paid are not shown separately let alone those for individual players

I have no access to correspondence on this but I have a strong personal opinion that the late change of audit partner taking a different view to her predecessors and requiring lots of adjustments to the accounts may well have been a significant factor in the club submitting its accounts slightly late after the December 31, deadline.

do you know what the quantum of the changes are and just how material?

They are all set out in note 27 of the accounts but, trust me, even for an accountant they are an insomnia cure!

They are largely cosmetic changes for how items should be reflected in the accounts but what is interesting is that the previous audit partner thought that the way items were shown in the 2023 and 2024 accounts was correct but his successor (who was appointed at short notice) thought differently and insisted on the changes being made or she would not sign off the audit report

These annual threads about the clubs accounts always crack me up. I couldn’t give a rats arse about the clubs accounts. Neither could 95% of the clubs fan base. The only account I’m interested in is my own bank account.
