  • Newport County v Tranmere Rovers

    Is anybody watching this now?

Its poor on quality from both sides, but Newport are really trying.

1-1 for now with Rovers down to 10 men.

I hope they manage to stay in the League, but will need a massive overhaul in the summer.

              Me too!

Very soft spot having played 2 seasons Welsh League (or whatever it was called then) for them in 1963-64-65.

Thinking back, it was hard to take it seriously at the time; they were managed by Billy Lucas who ran the pub across the road from Somerton.

Just out of interest here's a list of Lucas' association with the club having been manager 3 times over three decades!

The club had no money then, just as it is today, 60 years later.

Billy Lucas is Newport County A.F.C.'s longest-serving manager, holding the position for 17 years across three distinct spells between 1953 and 1974. A former Welsh international player, he managed the club from 1953–1961, 1962–1967, and 1970–1974, famously working without wages during his final spell to help with financial problems.

Key details regarding Billy Lucas's tenure at Newport County:
                Three Managerial Spells: 1953–1961, 1962–1967, and 1970–1974.
Longest Serving Manager: With 17 total years in charge, he holds the club record.
Achievements: During his second spell, he led the team against high-profile opponents in the FA Cup, such as Burnley in 1964 and Tottenham Hotspur. He also guided the team to near-promotion in 1972–73, missing out only on goal average.
Challenges: He resigned in 1961 due to lack of support and returned in 1970 to manage without wages for six months due to club financial issues.
Playing Career: Born in 1918, he was a Welsh international who played for Swindon Town, Swansea Town, and Newport County.

Lucas is recognized as a pivotal figure in the history of Newport County, managing the club during significant periods in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s.

First time County have been out of the bottom two in five months - Tranmere must be looking over their shoulders after eleven defeats in their last twelve games.

Most of Newport would have been gutted last night

I'm getting concerned about Barrow (the other Bluebirds). I hope they avoid the drop and my ideal two would be Harrogate and Crawley but I'm likely to be disappointed.

Not surprised in the slightest to see that Tranmere have sacked their manager today.
