Very interesting statistic!Originally posted by splott parker View PostFirst time for 55 years that the two teams contesting it are from two different European capital cities.
And I just thought of this: can you name a certain European capital city whose best football team only every reached the fourth division in its national league in its history and, as a result, never went remotely near any of the major European competitions?

A clue: the national team of the country involved was a major player in international competitions.Originally posted by Taunton Blue Genie View PostVery interesting statistic!

My initial thought was its possibly one of your east European holiday destinations, but then Germany popped into my head. Pre-reconciliation I dont recall Bonn having a successful team either.Originally posted by Taunton Blue Genie View PostVery interesting statistic!

Bonn it is, old fruit. Have a peanut!Originally posted by The Bloop View PostMy initial thought was its possibly one of your east European holiday destinations, but then Germany popped into my head. Pre-reconciliation I dont recall Bonn having a successful team either.
Weirdly, in 1999 Bonner SC, the club in question, signed the complete Cuban football team and with the agreement of Fidel Castro - and the team was paid only pocket money.

Re: European Cup Final
Great stat that. Until Cardiff Met and Hertha got promoted a few years back, Cardiff and Berlin were the only capitals not to have a team in their own top flight, which was also a good stat.
Ankara is an interesting one, and I don't know the reason behind it. Its a big city but has a terrible record in domestic football and it's clubs get poor crowds and rarely achieve anything.

Re: European Cup Final
What a stat.
I suppose outside of Spain the most successful clubs in the most successful nations aren't capital city clubs. I wonder why that tends to be?
England - Manchester U and Liverpool
Italy - Juventus and the Milan's
Germany - Bayern
