  • FA Cup final

Most low key final for years

Haven’t found anyone that gave any interest in it.

The cups dead, the most that has been written is about a coach in a tracksuit.

It was ruined when Rosenior was sacked.

His interviews would have been comedy gold.

Respect the arch , respect the King , 2 best coaches in the world.

So much live football. Nobody other than the fans of the teams taking part care much anymore.

Even though it was poor quality Celtic v Hearts was much more enjoyable.

Alonso to Chelsea could be interesting, and Mourinho to Real, maybe Pep on his way.

People have been saying this for decades. And it’s bollocks, of course.

It's not what it was, even in the late 90's early 00's as a kid I remember there was a massive (in comparison) build up to it and being excited by it.

My son who is into football didn't realise it was on until I mentioned it.

Back in the 70's etc I'm sure it was even bigger.

Little doubt the money involved in other tournaments and squad sizes allowing rotation have had an effect but I also feel the old Wembley had a different feel to it. Not sure what it is really, the "new" stadium is great of course but it's not really Wembley I suppose.

Of course it’s not what it was. Nothing is what it was. Times change. Things progress. That’s the way life works.

The FA Cup is not what it was. The League Cup is not what it was. The European competitions are not what they were. The Football League is not what it was. Etc etc. And when you consider how most of those things were in the past, it’s just as well.

              Re: FA Cup final

The FA Cup isn't what it was though is it? I remember as a kid it really was an all day event, nearly everyone watched it including members of my family not into football etc.

It's true that people can be overly nostalgic but there's definitely been a downgrade in importance of the FACup and FA cup final, no?

Correspondingly, the league has become more important, there's more importance in finishing 4th, avoiding relegation, getting into the conference League etc. Likewise I think European competitions are bigger than they were, so I think the FA Cup has been squeezed somewhat

I definitely sensed there was definitely a general lack of interest yesterday compared to previous years. The teams involved didn't help - most would have wanted both to lose

Without doubt, it has lost a huge amount of appeal to many. If not dead, then certainly seriously ill. It doesn't help that it is being held before the end of the season. Nobody that I know appeared keen to watch yesterday and I switched it off at half time. I'd lost all interest in what was an extremely boring match.

Of course it isn't. The FA Cup isn't what it was when it was one of a tiny handful of live games on TV each season, and therefore of interest to most football fans. Amazing, huh? It's almost as if times have changed.

We've had this sort of thread on here pretty much every year since the message board's inception, except for the year when we got to the FA Cup final of course. It was viewed a bit differently then.

You are right, but that's what people are saying. Even within the context of times changing, some specific decision - loss of replays, both semi finals not being on TV, game not being the finale of the domestic season etc - these are all specific decisions that havent helped.

13 million would also watch Coronation St on a Wednesday evening thirty years ago. Same thing really. Technology has changed, Society has changed, Choices have changed.

It's not dead, it's just not the main sporting event anymore. Try telling Macclesfield that it's dead after they beat Palace in the 3rd round, or Wrexham that it's dead when they went 2-1 up against Chelsea with 10 mins to go, or Southampton that it's dead when they knocked Arsenal out in the Quarters.

Even its lesser cousin the League Cup isn't dead, 33000 people turned up to watch us play Chelsea in one of the most memorable matches of our season

Haven't helped what exactly? I mean, does it matter that some people are not as keen on the FA Cup as they used to be? What difference does it make in the grand scheme of things?

There's a certain percentage of people who will tell you pretty much anything and everything is not as good as it used to be or it's dying or it's going to implode, etc, but so what? During the last six seasons, two clubs have won the FA Cup for the first time and one of them is now odds-on to win a European competition thanks to that FA Cup win. Crowds for FA Cup games are often big. Upsets still happen.

People will tell you the League Cup is dead, but we had our biggest crowd of the season in that competition.

It's the same old stuff every year. Of course things have changed and some competitions are not perceived as being as glamorous as they used to be, but the fact is that loads of FA Cup finals down the years have been poor to watch. Nothing has changed in that respect other than the fact that people can now watch live football on TV day in, day out, so the FA Cup final is not such a big deal.
