Toshack is also routinely introduced as 'John Benjamin' in the spanish media. Benjamin being his middle name. I have no idea why, and it's a useless piece of information to share, although i wasn't going to be out done in the John Toshack trivia stakes.

The Spanish naming system is to use two surnames - father's surname followed by mother's surname, so they have probably assumed that Benjamin was his father's surname and Toshack his mother's.

For example Michael Portillo's formal Spanish name is Miguel Portillo Blyth. His mother was Cora Blyth.

Good shout. My sister married a Dutchman and had to tak her surname onto his, which caused a problem when they moved to the UK - as his name was Schreurs. It's difficult for most people in the UK to pronounce even when it is said aloud to them - as the Dutch 'sch' is not exactly the same as an English 'sh' or a German 'sch' and 'r' is rolled somewhat. As a result, she would be called in waiting rooms as Mrs [my surname]-screwers!
Moreover, she divorced him and he married a Russian lady who then became Mrs Shatalova-Schreurs, which sounded like 'shat-all-over-screwers'. Not the best name to have called out on the tannoy whilst waiting to see the doc or dentist.

His old man was a Scot, worked on the council with my Uncle Georgie. Georgie always pronounced the surname as Tooshack.
