    Re: Brentford vs Arsenal

If arteta hadn’t put the comes out for guardiola there is no way he’d be in this job in the first place. They’re just getting worse

Has the old adage "be careful what you wish for" been any more apt?

The Brentford celebrations brought back some great memories of our 3-2 win over would be champions Man City eight years ago.
I think that Brentford might do a little better than us though and avoid the drop.
      mac...only 891..thought their cheapest was around 1200..

If he hadn't done well as a senior player at Arsenal, if Gaurdiola hadn't praised him endlessly for the work he did at Man City and then if hadn't put in a good interview...

He won 2 FA Cups at Arsenal and Guardiola praised him for being good at putting the cones out for training. Seems mad that he deserved to be interviewed for one of the top 5 biggest jobs in British football.

Really pleased for Ethan Pinnock, played in the same FGR side as Kieffer Moore, he looked good then in non-league and he looks the part now in the PL, the Defensive equivalent of Jamie Vardy.

First game, first win in the Premier League and the first game with a full house of fans, well done to them, lap it up.

                      Re: Brentford vs Arsenal

Let's face it, if you're a Brentford or, say, a Brighton and Bournemouth playing your first ever Premier League game, Arsenal at home is a superb fixture to start with because you're, allegedly, playing a so called big club and so there's no great fall out if the game is lost, but there's always a very decent chance you could begin with a win against one of the "big boys". How on earth, the present day version of Arsenal were considered to be worthy of inclusion in the proposed ESL is beyond me - they would have been overwhelming favourites to finish bottom of it surely if the competition had got off the ground.

If one player typifies the modern Arsenal it's Xhaka - he's got ability, but often gives the impression he doesn't fancy it this afternoon/evening.

Mind you, I have some sympathy with any Arsenal player to an extent because it must be so hard playing in front of that bunch of supporters. Pre Wenger, the good Arsenal sides I saw were built on solid defence first and foremost, hence the old ~"1-0 to the Arsenal" song, but that all changed under the Frenchman and their fans now want Wenger type football, but also demand that it not be accompanied by the sort of results that typified his last few seasons in charge.

I'm sure the Arsenal fans will already be in uproar about their club's prospects this season as the latest Wenger replacement finds the club almost impossible to manage - Arsenal fans demand the sort of season they've had maybe four or five times in their whole history every year and, thinking about it, even a repeat of the 70/71 double triumph in terms of style of play would not be considered good enough because they wouldn't be entertaining enough.

Well done to Brentford, they were definitely the better side last night, but there are far, far tougher games for them to come.

Not in the least. That lap of honour was well deserved. I'm sure if it had been our first home premiership game after lockdown, against Arsenal, and we had beaten them 2-0, then Mick and the boys would have done exactly the same

                          Re: Brentford vs Arsenal

Brentford have a clever model that works for them.

Scrapped the academy because the bigger clubs were nabbing their players for nothing.

They would do the hard work in finding and training youngsters. Then the bigger clubs in London would pick off the best players.

                          The flipped it around.

Instead they invested in their B team - and now pick up players from all of the bigger clubs reserves and U18's and U23's to play in their B team. The B team doesn't play in a reserve league. But they do have a large pool of players (from ages 17 to 21 years old) and play a series of friendlies. From good non-league teams to Rangers and Celtic or U23 league teams.

The B team and first team play exactly the same style. So the migration from B teams to the first team is seamless. The youngsters see a clear path to the first team.

I am not sure if that would work in Cardiff but it works for Brentford very well.

The old Highbury Gooners were much more football savvy. When they moved to the new stadium there were a lot of armchair supporters on the waiting list for season tickets and a completely different crowd started going. This coincided with social media 'influencers' and 'super-supporters' plus that *bleep* Piers Morgan stirring the pot. Hence the Wenger Out brigade. Wenger, in my view, was/is one of the greatest managers and should never have been hounded out of the club. It was awful the way Gooners instigated his forced resignation.

I remember reading some figures about the demographic of old Highbury season ticket holders (like a mate of mine) and it was something astounding like 70% lived within a five-mile radius of the ground. That always impressed me for a London club and that was still in the early 2000s. It's not like that anymore.
