Nevertheless, it came as a real surprise to me when I casually mentioned that I was going to the cricket the next day and she asked if she could come along too. So it was, she was thrilled to see Viv and Adrian Dale bat for most of that first day against Middlesex and ,if anything, she enjoyed her visit to Abergavenny to watch us against Gloucestershire I think it was a few weeks later even more.

I only went to the first day of the Middlesex match, but I can remember meeting up with some people who had been to the third day who were saying how they had been stood by the pavilion at the end of play shouting at Mike Gatting off for killing the game by batting on so long in Middlesex's first innings - there aren't many teams that could have made Gatting look a tactical genius on the fourth day, but Glamorgan managed it .
As a kid we used to holiday in Port Eynon on the Gower, mainly because Glamorgan would Usually be playing at St Helens (the real home of Glamorgan cricket) while we were there. As it turned out in the summer of 64 Australia were the opponents,as an eight year old l can’t remember anything that happened on the pitch that day ,but still remember the singing and the Australian captain saying in his speech to the crowd after the game ok we’ve lost to Glamorgan what’s new(which l think is the coolest response to defeat I’ve ever heard) and asking the crowd to sing the anthem,a memory that will will stay with me forever.

Back to the present day- Northants 255/0. Nearly 850 runs scored for 8 wickets. Im here watching and to say the pitch is dead is an understatement.

There's lots of runs being scored all over the country in this round of games when the norm this early in the season is to see the seamers prospering - it's beginning to look like the only way there'll be a positive result in our game is if Northants get something over 700 and then bowl us out in a session or two on the final day.

570/8d plays 515/4*. Sounds like some absolutely turgid cricket to be honest, but the same goes for most games this round...

Northants 611-4 - coming up to lunch on the fourth day and only twelve wickets have fallen in the game so far.

Rob Newton, who scored a century yesterday, on the pitch provided for this game;-

"It's a poor pitch in my opinion, there's nothing in it for the bowlers, there's not that much enjoyment in the batting since it's so slow and low, it's about sticking it out.

I'm sure anyone watching will agree it's a poor pitch, the kind of pitch they're trying to ease out of the game, it's not much fun for anyone watching or playing."

                Absolutely agree.

If wickets fall on day 1 the ecb pitch inspectors are at grounds like a shot! When pitches like this are produced they have nothing to say. I was there yesterday- given the choice I'd rather an unpredictable wicket than that.

                  736-8 now.

Very good point about pitch inspectors. If a pitch is dangerous, then fair enough, but sides get docked points for pitches which turn - the pitch for this match is far worse for cricket than a bowler friendly one is.

11 o clock start v Somerset at Sophia in the 50 over competition today.

Lovely day for it then a walk across to the city.

2 heavy defeats for glamorgan so far in the competition. I'd expect a 3rd today

Enjoy the weather. Agree that another heavy defeat is on the cards.

A good effort by Lloyd and the lower order but pathetic from the front line batsmen with just one run from five batters

Good to see plucky little Glamorgan pick up a win on Sky yesterday, chasing down 347 to beat Sussex. We kept losing key wickets but young Danny Douthwaite held his nerve to put us in a great position then teenager Roman Walker hit the winning six. Nothing on the game for us but the youngsters embraced like they'd just won the World Cup and the rest of the team, who'd been cheering noisily from the balcony, came down en masse to congratulate them. No reason to get carried away about it, of course, but we may as well enjoy the positives when they come.

Highlights of Douthwaite's innings here. The technique suggests he won't be opening in test cricket any time soon but he looks to have a big heart (he bowled well too). Not sure about his haircut but he's young so there's plenty of time to work on that.

Daniel Douthwaite starred in front of the Sky Sports cameras as his unbeaten half-century helped Glamorgan beat Sussex at Hove.
