Really surprised by many of those stats Eric (thanks for providing them by the way). I’ve not seen as many matches as normal this season, so that may explain why the feeling I get from what I have seen that we’re passing the ball slightly better looks to be wrong.

The shots against per game and per goal are almost contradictory with one suggesting better defending, but the telling one has to be the shots per goal which suggests we’re not getting the blocks in we were and, perhaps, worse goalkeeping, while the shots for per goal and game suggest, correctly I’d say, that we’ve come up against some better goalkeeping this season.

I think it's worthwhile mentioning that under Harris last season, we played less long stuff and our shorter passing was more accurate. Under Harris our overall pass success rate was 73.5%, while under old Mick it was a shabby 57.3%, so your observation about us passing the ball slightly better would be correct if comparing McCarthy of last season with this.

I notice that we've had more of the ball this season so far. A rise of 1.4% would be higher if compared solely with last season's possession stats under McCarthy. I agree that we have tried to pass the ball a little more this season but I also wonder if teams are happier if we have possession, as we generally look quite toothless in open play. Clearly the drop in long ball accuracy and increase in headers won indicates more of a desire to just whack the ball upfield and hope for the best. It's a shame I don't have those stats for last season under McCarthy.
