    Re: Tory MP Stabbed

Absolutely crazy, how can someone do this? Such terribly sad news that he’s died.

One of the best things about politicians in this country is, other than the ones at the very top, they’re easily accessible to the community. This sort of thing will just make everything more difficult.

Who would want to be a politician in this day and age

If you want to become moderately wealthy and aren't exceptionally smart, it is still a bloody good option.

What a mess, twitter desperate to profile the killer before we know any details which is depressing but not unexpected. Agree with some of the above about the accessibility of politicians, our previous local MP, Mark Prisk (shifted out by the current loons) was committed to working for local people no matter their allegiance and it sounds from reports as if David Amess was of a similar build. If I was an MP right now I would be a lot less keen to meet the public.

It also incentivises politicians to be grey and not utter any controversial words or hold any strong opinions because they will be the ones who have a target on their backs. This is a very bad thing.

            Sickening.

This is the fourth major stabbing incident involving MPs holding public surgeries since 2010 - with (now) two MPs and an MPs assistant dead.

Apart from the personal tragedy and grief for family and friends, this will push politicians further away from the public, behind screens and protected by bodyguards or police.

I believe the going salary for an MP these days is in the 80k-90k range. Easy money if you’re in a relatively unimportant safe seat. Most people would vote for your party without giving a damn what your policies are so minimal effort or campaigning needed.

                Re: Tory MP Stabbed

I can remember him winning Basildon I think it was in 1983, it was one of the first results to come through and confirmed the Tories were on their way to as big a victory as the polls were predicting. So, he was an MP, and a backbencher, for nearly forty years and, based on stuff I’d heard about him before today’s tragedy, he was popular with not just members of his own party. Whether the murder was politically motivated or down to an unhinged constituent, the action which should have been taken after Jo Cox’s murder really has to be now.

I would imagine that meetings will become all virtual after this

It is so terrible that you go to work and do not return home to family.

I hope not. But politics does need cleaning up, especially the rhetoric on line.

Well said. My understanding is he was a pretty honourable, joyous and hard working MP who seemingly put constituents first.

                        Tremendously sad.

It was 92 and was a sign that Major was going to pick up a surprise win.

Left wing tory , came over as a decent man

Anti Abortionist , Pro animal rights

I don't think this is anything to do with politics more to do with the internal schism of whoever did this

As someone else has said that's the end of open gp surgeries

Very very sad day. A man of conviction and decency. I particularly admired his stance on animal rights. Whatever ones political beliefs this is a horrific tragedy and casts a shadow over all of us.

Terrible, terrible atrocity, devastating for his family and friends. I’d hope that MP surgeries can stay face to face though, it would seem like giving in to these nutters. Maybe a lot of MPs would agree. Evil bastards mustn’t win. RIP to a decent man.
