I read as well that formally the advice will change to suggest that cyclist use the middle of the road.

Which in a practical sense is absolutely mad.

I thought cyclists always should have positioned themselves centrally.

I’m not a cyclist (you couldn’t pay me to cycle on our roads with how aggressive and blind car drivers can be) The problem is drivers over taking close and fast.

There are some arse hole cyclists but they’re quite unlikely to kill or hurt anyone on the same scale a motorist is.

If everyone just paid a bit more attention to the road and the hazards, both cyclists and car drivers, the roads would be a safer place. But so many still drive as close as possible to the car in front and over take bikes, horses etc way too close.

Following the change of advice, they would be overtaking them a damned site closer in future.

It's crazy and reckless. And I suspect few cyclists would observe this

I don't think that's a big deal, to overtake safely you need to go into the oncoming lane anyway so it's got to be clear.

On how many single carriageway roads does it make overtaking easier if the cyclist is towards the side, as opposed to the middle of the lane? In either instance, to overtake safely, you'd be on the opposite side anyway.

in my entire 25 years of driving a motor vehicle on this countries roads, the longest individual time I've been delayed by being stuck behind a cyclist is probably about 2 minutes tops.
I've never understood why people get so angry about that, lighten up, what were you going to do in those 2 minutes?

Rule H2
Provides stronger priority for pedestrians at junctions and clarity of who has right of way.

The new rule states that instead of cars having priority when they turn left or right into junctions, pedestrians crossing the road will now have priority over those vehicles.

Nothing new about this, it has been the same for over 50 years, when I took my test::
"Vehicles turning from a major road to a secondary road must give way to pedestrian crossing the minor road"
I don't know why they have said this is new but at least highlighting it might educate some modern drivers,

Another point to bear in mind is that the Highway code is not law. It is intended to make road users aware of their rights and obligations. A lot of the things in it are covered elsewhere by statue but not everything. It very cleverly doesn't tell you which are and which aren't.
I've read several articles like the one mentioned in the last couple of weeks and they are all the same.... basically click bait. The highway code does not change the actual law so whatever it says about cyclists and pedestrian is either already enshrined in law or is merely advice.

exactly. Same people who fear their masculinity is threatened if somebody overtakes them or ask to be let in on a slip road or when merging 2 lanes to 1.

Why on earth would you object to cyclists keeping to one side to allow vehicles to pass more easily?

Is that not just deliberately antagonising people, creating more stress, conflict etc, ultimately discouraging cyclists in the long run?

Seems to me that if you can safely pull to one side it's the sensible, polite and reasonable thing to do.

I did hear there were TV adverts to come, but I agree. My understanding is that the rules apply now, so we should have been watching those adverts....

Could have sworn that the article linked to said "Changes to the Highway Code
Major changes are being made to the Highway Code on the 29th January 2022".
