Re: Playing on Wednesday's
Yes I remember that too right from early 60s.Originally posted by Hot Shot Hamish. View PostI seem to remember as a kid all the way through the 70s, that Wednesday was our home night. All the European games were Wednesday including Real Madrid.
Our mid-week games were always on a wednesday and I seem to remember kick off being 7.30 PM

Re: Playing on Wednesday's
Yes 7.15 on a mid week game, not 7.30 as I mentioned in my post.Originally posted by tpcnw View PostAnother interesting midweek fact is that the standard kick off time until the mid 60s was 7.15pm. It seemed to be 7.30 until the mid 80s when it became the current 7.45
Also the standard Saturday afternoon kick off time at Ninian Park was 3.15 until the 1960s, though it was brought forwards during the winter before floodlights were installed.
I think the 3.15 start on a Sat was because the pubs threw out at 3 :hehe:

Re: Playing on Wednesday's
You are on the money here! Of the 40 games played on a Tuesday, 6 were at home. We won 1 of the home games and 1 out of 34 away games!Originally posted by Hot Shot Hamish. View PostIs that just home games though or all games home and away? If it’s all games then it would make more sense as Tuesday matches would have been the away games. Apologies if I have hypothesised incorrectly.
Of the 54 games played on a Wednesday, 40 were at home. We won 24.
From the start of the 1977 season we won 14 successive league and cup games at home on a Wednesday. The winning run would end in March 1981 against, ironically, Sheffield Wednesday (0-0) and defeat in Jan 1982 to Oldham (1-2) was our first home defeat on a Wednesday for nearly 5 years.
Our longest undefeated run on Wednesdays (bar the break for the war) was between September 2011, when we beat Southampton 2-1 and Jan 2021, when we lost 1-0 at home to QPR. While nearly a decade unbeaten on a particular day sounds impressive, there were only 10 fixtures in those years! :hehe:

Re: Playing on Wednesday's
Good enough theory for me! :hehe:Originally posted by splott parker View PostIt’s obviously the Coronation Street thing, by the 80s fans had got pissed off missing Wednesday’s episode, that’s my theory anyway.
The change happened in the 1982/83 season.
Prior to that season we had played only 23 home matches on a Tuesday since we started in the league in 1920. Between 1982/83 and 1985/86 we had matched that total.
On the opposite side of the coin, we've only played 40 home matches on a Wednesday since 1982/83, that's over 40 seasons. We played 41 between 1972/73 and 1981/82, that's 10 seasons. In fact, in the last 40 seasons there have been 19 where we haven't played at home on a Wednesday night at all (not including Welsh cup/European games).
I wonder why there was such a change? We had been relegated to Division 3 in 1982. We played more games on a Tuesday in 1982/83 and 1985/86 in the third tier than we did in Division 2 in 1983/84 and 1984/85. It may have been a league thing? I also wonder if it was anything to do with football highlights being on both BBC and ITV on a Wednesday evening?
