  • Ryan Giles - reason for Wolves recall

Wolves recalled Ryan Giles from his loan deal at Cardiff and sent him on loan to Blackburn Rovers during the January transfer window.

According to this Wolves wanted Giles to play as a left winger or left sided attacker (as under Mick) - not as a left wing back (as Morison chose to use him).

I assume Blackburn are playing him as Mick did?

no, the times I've bothered to check he was played as a fullback In a back 4

Lot of coach speak there which left me confused. Giles wasn’t playing left back under Morison, he was playing left wing back and, for all of that guff about us playing like Wolves under McCarthy (do they play with five centre halves then?), I don’t think there was too much difference in the number of crosses Giles was putting in once McCarthy left was there? Also, if Giles is going to be part of a front three, you’d like him to be able to contribute a few goals, but his career record, and what I saw of him, suggests he’s a good crosser, but no finisher.

Very confusing. I'm sure the word was that Wolves wanted him playing as a wing back when he was with us.

“A good example is (Giles). Under Mick McCarthy, Cardiff were playing quite similarly to Wolves in a lot of different metrics and Gilo was producing quality crosses and regular assists from the left wing.

“Then by the time the manager changes and Gilo goes back to left-back, the formation changed and their style changed, which was really reflected in Gilo’s stats. It wasn’t making the most of what we wanted him there for. We don’t just want 3-4-3 or 3-5-2.”

          This is wholly inaccurate.

In no universe did city every play anything like Wolves under McCarthy. Under MM Giles was our only wide player. He never ever played left back for us (just WB) and given a few more weeks Morison would have probably pushed him forward we we got a new left back / WB in. Even if he stayed at WB he would have been on a much better assist rate now given that we have pushed further up the pitch and gotten some better strikers in

Note that Giles has yet to register an assist at Blackburn. Lol.

Makes you wonder who they have keeping watch over these players

This story doesn't appear to square at all with what was said at the time. He was ready to come back here and Wolves were ready to let him come back but wouldn't make a definitive decision until the last day of the window, which was too late for us and we went elsewhere. Wolves were previously reported to be happy with where he was playing for us. As far as I can recall he never actually played left back for us in a four anyway. The story makes Wolves look a bit stupid really.

He was a poor finisher for us, missed a fair few one on ones including in both our early season derby defeats

You're right it doesn't quite add up

I think the only time we played with a back 4 this season was against Reading under McCarthy?

                    Who said that? Wolves?

Maybe Morison's PowerPoint was playing up when he was dealing was Wolves.

Giles had 5 assists under McCarthy and 4 under Morison, so this interview doesn't make a lot of sense at all. Quite funny, though.

Does he know his left from his right ?

Seems like Sky Sports fell for the story that came out regarding where Wolves were happy for Giles to play - in the on screen line up for today's match at Fulham, they put him on the left of a front three. However, Tony Mowbray obviously didn't get the memo, as he actually appears to be playing Giles on the right side of midfield. Wolves will be livid and will recall him immediately !!

PS. Mitrovic diving in box again already.
