The government have been courting these people for years and they have been funding their campaigns. Inaction against Russians now would just amplify it.

Who cares about the timing? The more sanctions put on anything that smells Russian, is all good with me.

Putin stated a fortnight ago that any sanctions imposed deemed too extreme would be viewed as an act of war. Perhaps he was bluffing.

The UK government appears to think so.
