Don't stress he'll be after me soon, you do know he stores everything you say .

Instesd of paying union fees of £15 or £20 I'd simply save the money in an ISA and hire an employment law solicitor if one was ever needed , they'd be sure to get you a nice bit of compensation.

Eventually the stranglehold of the unions resulted in the closure of the plant & the loss of 5,500 jobs. Years later I joined a Canadian company who had the chance to take over the plant and I asked why they didn’t go through with the acquisition. The answer was the unions were too strong weren’t prepared to accept the takeover.

P.s. the DVLA service levels are shite. I waited 10 weeks for a document recently because they didn’t realise their printer was broken & not sending out the documents!!!
As is the passport office , I know someone who has been waiting for various passport renewal for 3 months .

You do wonder what value the taxpayer is getting .

Both the DVLA and Passports units are very unionised to the detriment of the people .

Yeah, you just keep on thinking about yourself - a typical product of the I, me, mine eighties.

I'm with the GMB and the £13 a month covers you for so much more than you think.
Git bitten by a dog doing my work and ended up in hospital for 16 days.
Informed the union when I got out and the rest was sorted for me without any hassle on my part.
Their solicitors did all the work to get compensation for me for Injury and loss of earnings (even though I got full pay while in hospital I lost a pile of overtime and bonuses as it was during our peak period)
Getting back to the original thread the staff at the DVLA haven't covered themselves in glory.
Their refusal to go back to their offices is shameful. Most people are now working normally but the civil service think is a jolly jape to keep working from home with little productivity.
One of the reasons for the lack of lorry drivers was the backlog of licence applications not dealt with by these lazy
            self indulgent prats.
I bought a car in December and still no sign of my new log book.
The irony is that they are the kind of people that sneer at people on benefits and say they are lazy for taking money and not finding a job.
Also they are not putting money back into the local businesses around the DVLA surroundings who are losing the money they would be taking through them being back at the offices but it's ok they are saving a fortune by WFH doing little as possible but getting full pay.
            Scandalous.

I was talking to a customer of mine last week who is going back to the office at the start of next month
He went on a rather large rant about it, the company he works ( he isn't a civil servant ) for tried to get people back last September, after christmas and now again at the start of April, the workers have refused to return, now the excuses were " we dont feel safe, we work better from home, it'll save the company money on heating the offices ", now his rant was this was all rubbish, the truth is that they have to " log in " at 9, so many do it just after rolling out of bed, they log in, have a shower, eat breakfast and then start , he just sees it as a jolly, then they save money by not having to drive to the office, he used to leave the house at 7 to get into an ready to work at 9

But he hates it, says the only people WFH suits is the sad awkward losers who can not interact with colleagues or just the plain lazy,

As I’ve said before on here, my annual target was raised when I started working from home, so I was more use to the Patent Office working from home than I was going into the office. Your customer sounds an ignorant, selfish idiot to me, a bit of a snowflake actually.

Good on you Bob but you are in the minority who work from home who do more.
You obviously have a good work ethic plus you have been set targets.
This is not the case everywhere
Most people need a work environment to be productive.
Try ringing the DVLA and getting an answer.
You will have a very long wait.

To be fair, I never tried to ring the DVLA before the pandemic, it seemed a waste of time.

My impression is that most people would prefer to work from home if they could, it’s cheaper (especially with current fuel prices), more convenient and enables a degree of flexibility. For me it boils down to would most people just use it to “swing the lead” and sit about doing nothing or would they be conscientious and get their work done, albeit at a time that is most convenient to them?

I would say that if a company has access to the technology that enables people to work from home, then they should be able to monitor the amount of work their employees are doing compared to when they attend and take appropriate action if there is a consistent shortfall.

Raab, Truss and the others in the Cabinet who have published work in which they basically accuse British workers of being slackers betray the lack of trust which is at the heart of the sort of opinions we see in this thread. As a former Civil Servant, I think the fact you could not contact places like the DVLA, Passport Office and HMRC before the pandemic without a long wait is a disgrace. However, it’s the same when you try to contact many private companies, whereas there are others who are very good and quick when you ring them - to me, that doesn’t mean all of the workers at the places with poor response times are slackers, it’s more to do with bosses not investing in better, more modern equipment and lower staff levels than demand merits.

The longer I am at home in my job I find myself being less and less productive. I’ve gone back into the office more to try and snap out of bad habits.

As for your swing the lead comment, there’s people in every company doing naff all, but they would have done naff all in the office either.

Everyone knows who they are in each company
