There have been loads of footballers who have been fined or banned for betting since then. Cameron Jerome was one if memory serves. However, I don't think any of them were accused of match fixing of any sort. I think they'd just breached FA rules by betting on matches.

Joey Barton bet on hundreds of matches. There must be more, but perhaps none made it to court like Grobbelaar. Hans Segers was up for match fixing, but that was a bribe rather than betting.
Bloody hell, I'd forgotten about Joey Barton. Just looked up the story and the list of matches. One of them was Newcastle Reserves v Arsenal Reserves (9 March 2011) Arsenal to win £100 (Bet lost)! WTF? He actually lost a lot. Ultimately he lost his career as a player.

It seems silly to us, but to become a professional player you have to have a strong self belief and a competitive desire to win. Not surprising that for some, it spills over into betting.

I remember Michael Owen racking up gambling debts, and none of us will forget that Chopra's career pretty much finished under that cloud.

Yes, no match-fixing but breaching FA rules. Interesting, considering how betting companies and football are closely linked.

Matt Le Tissier admitted to being part of a betting scam.

I believe he admitted it after his career was over.

Remember watching West Ham v Arse on TV..As Arse kicked off with a short pass to Bergkamp..he then kicked it straight out to touch..took probably 3/4 secs from KO..guaranteed betting fix for me..he hoofed it to make sure..wasn't even going towards a team mate.

Unfortunately the Gambling industry is littered with conflicts of interests. The gambling commission ie the governing body are funded by the bookmaker. Many sports - horse racing, greyhounds, snooker, darts.etc are propped up by the bookmaker.

It’s of little surprise TLG takes the side of the bookmaker. He’d make a good bookie as he clearly has no empathy for others.

Denise Coates is the highest paid CEO in the country. Worth 12 billion and still paying herself 400m+ per year of money gained from the misery of others. But she’s a Stoke City supporter so she must be a decent and proper owner.

There speaks a man who apparently believes nobody should be able to enjoy a bet simply because he can't control himself.

I note you have no qualms about supporting a professional football club that is bankrolled by a man who has made a large part of his fortune through various gambling enterprises.

How do I believe that? I still enjoy a flutter on the football myself and best of luck to those that are able to enjoy it and it never become a problem. That’s like saying I don’t think anyone should enjoy a beer because there are alcoholics?? You must have me mistaken for someone else.

My issue with the gambling industry is the targeting of the problem gamblers and more so the vulnerable, teenagers and young adults. Pubs and alcohol companies wouldnt be allowed to target alcoholics as their target market. It’s no secret they specifically target the problem gamblers and make more profit from the small percentage of problem gamblers than they do the rest of their customer base. Bet 365 were the pioneers of target advertising and saturated the tv advertising market before they had their wings clipped a few years ago.

You talk about safe guarding but you are delusional if you think the safe guarding is right and proper within the gambling industry. It’s akin to the safeguarding that saw Ian Huntley become a school caretaker.
