Today was the 13th occasion we've lost two games with a combined goal difference of -7. The previous occasion was last season when we lost 2-0 and 5-0 to Sheffield Wednesday, who would go on to be relegated. Prior to that we lost 7-0 on aggregate to Man City in our last Premier League season. Spookily, in 6 of those 13 games, we lost the second game in early April.....
Most of the other occurrences of this happened in the 1930s. There is one occasion where we managed a -7 goal difference with a side but managed one draw; Southend in 1936/37 when we drew 1-1 and lost 8-1 away.
We've had a worse aggregate goal difference than -7 on 5 occasions, -11 being the worst. 3 of those occasions it was against Preston (no surprise). Tottenham and Wolves making the other 2 occurrences.
Quick quiz question - against which side do we have our best ever aggregate scoreline over 2 league games and what was that aggregate?
