  • Gavin Whyte

What are the chances of Gavin Whyte being involved in the City squad next season? He has another year left to run on his contract, but he never seems to get a mention when next season’s side is being discussed.

i think he'll be off on another year long loan to league one and that will be the end of it.

he seems to be playing more and more as a striker these days and that's not only pretty much the only part of the squad that has plenty of numbers for next season
Davies, Harris, Collins, Watters but also an area where we will almost certainly bring someone in to be a target man, which isn't Whytes game at all.

I think it was the right kind of signing for us, young, doing very well at league one level, but for whatever reason it hasn't worked out for him here, but with those kind of signings a proportion of them always don't work out

Not sure where he fits in the current set up. I don’t think he’s the type of player he would want to try at wingback. I know someone mentioned he’s been playing as a number 10 but then we have Harris, Colwill, Davies for that role. Be interesting to see if he finds a place in the squad but I think he will try and free up the wages.

I always thought he was a wingback in the making.Gets up and down the pitch well and has a big engine so keeps going. Not one to let you down for effort at least.

I've always thought he would make a good wingback as well, but would be too much of a gamble to bring him back to play a role he's never played, especially when it's such a vital one for this formation.
hopefully Oxford go up in the playoffs and they offer us some money for him

            I did originally as well.
I think Morison will be looking for more pace at wingback though a bit like Dramah

Here are my observations based on the few times I saw him playing as a right wingback… I remember his first game, early-on, when he got forward and actually beat his opponent by “going outside” him and putting in a decent cross into the box. Unfortunately, “our Neil” didn’t seem to like his wingbacks/wingers too far up the pitch, and seemed to also like them cutting inside to put in a cross, hence taking all momentum out of a move.
As he played more games he seemed to venture less and less up the pitch, so I assumed that the manager had a word in his ear to say that he liked his wingbacks to first and foremost devote most of their time defending and not risking a nosebleed up’tother end of’pitch.
So really, my answer in the case of Gavin Whyte is that our manager really does need to have knowledge of what he has been doing while out on loan, then take a serious look at him during pre-season to see if he can fit in with how we are going to play next season.

Harris and Davies aren't 10s mate.

10 is an attacking midfielder. The ither 2 are strikers, wingers at a push. 10 plays behind the striker.

I've wondered if he could play there as well.

I thought he played as a winger under Neil.

One of the reasons that he ran around so much when he played for us was that he was frequently out of position when we didn't have the ball. Not a great attribute for a wing-back.

Yes, I think you are correct.
However, I think my general point about Neil’s use of wide men is pretty much correct. Our wingers were more inclined to cut inside. He preferred the type of winger that was more defensively minded and had an engine to be able to cover defence and attack and would go mental when a winger was missing from left/right back duty during an opposition attack.
I called Whyte a wingback, because as each game went by, he was increasingly seen on defensive duty more and more, rather than attacking. I can understand why, cos Warnock would go ballistic when he lost the ball up the pitch.

I know he liked his wingers ti get back, just the way your post read was as if he were playing that position under Neil.

I would certainly class Harris and Colwill as someone who can play behind the striker, they wouldn’t lead the line.

Davies less so but I don’t class him as an out and out striker and don’t see us playing with wingers.

I’d like to see Whyte given a go at wingback but I think Morison has very specific ideas on what he wants from his wingback and not sure Whyte is that player.

It's not that we would play with wingers, but they are both pacy attackers who have been used out there, usually inexperienced strikers do get thrown out wide earlynon in their careers...so I'd say they are strikers who can play the winder role (not that we play with wingers, again)

Obviously we are going back and forth over our own opinions here but I don't believe either of them ate what you want from a number 10. Passing and vision being 2 things I'd look for...
