They named the large terrace area in Penydarren Park after him.

It's commonly known as the 'w@nk bank'.

I think that's a great idea myself , I love to be chilling out by the water but families need their space too

So I basically head past merthyr on my right on the by pass and I hit the reservoirs ?
In Pontsticill the fishing bank is the sailing club side (I think).

Try the postcode CF48 2UR, there's parking allowed on the road before you get to the Mountain railway station, although there's usually anglers on the trail as it were. Lovely part of the world, very chilled.

What's the Butchers Arms like these days?

          Do they still have accommodation?

          Lovely part of the world.

Aberglais in Pontsarn is nice too, its about 2 miles further down than the taff trail than Ponsticill in an area called Pontsarn. Nice walk along the Taf Fechan river from the Aberglais on the old roman road too.

                    Merthyr Jacks banner last Saturday

                    Wtf is all that about

I suppose its mid way between both but not long ago that would have been seen as an act of treason

Loads of the feckers up here now, they all come out of the woodwork after their stint in the Prem. That young lad whos flag that is actually sound as feck, impossible to dislike him even though he is a JB!!

Didnt realise that, thought it was over by the car park on the other side where the ice cream van used to park. See people over there fishing sometimes.

I'm assuming anglers go both sides.

I've used Pontsticill and Dolygaer reservoirs for trail running. Lovely views when you go up on the trails surrounding both reservoirs. Also a decent walk/trot to Talybont reservoir if I'm feeling particularly fit.

                          All on the doorstep butt.

Gets a bad press Merthyr by some but where else could you see beautiful nature and then score heroin within 5 minutes.

                          Something for everyone.

They should use that as a tourist slogan.

I never fully appreciated how close we live to such beauty until lockdown and started walking the local rivers and reservoirs. I like the forestry trail loop just up from the Red Cow. Once you go over the bridge and walk up the hill to the the top so your overlooking the Ponsticill Reservoir, theres not many better views. I walked it last summer, it was a beautiful sunny day, the trees were reflecting off the water and the steam train was running and you could have literally been anywhere in the world. Looked like something youd see in Canada or Colorado not 5 miles from the Gurnos. :hehe:

Yes, since Bike Park Wales come to the town, and with mountain biking, trail running, hiking, etc really taking off this last decade the Merthyr area in gerneral has had a bit of a tourist renaissance. Butchers were one of the first to really cash in on the bunk houses to accomodate the bikers.

Both pubs are nice, I prefer the Red Cow, its not as cramped as the Butchers. Come the summer though very, very busy, get a quieter pint in the Butchers.

The Upper Neuadd loop is a good un to.
And the tunnel that has old escort or cavaliers burnt out inside.
